***UPDATED BONDS***
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE from Sheriff Randy Brown:
On April 8, 2026, Deputies with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare concern after Stephen Rehbein failed to report to work.
Deputies were dispatched to a residence located in the 3300 block of County Road 265 in Mico, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence; however, they observed evidence indicating possible foul play. Investigators were called to the scene and, upon further examination, located additional evidence suggesting a crime had occurred.
A search warrant was obtained, and investigators gathered information identifying vehicles belonging to Stephen Rehbein. Utilizing available technology, one of the vehicles was later located traveling in the Corpus Christi, Texas area. With assistance from Corpus Christi Police Department officers, the vehicle was stopped to conduct a welfare check on Mr. Rehbein.
The vehicle was occupied by two adults, identified as Cassandra Lange (29) and Joby Williams (30), along with two children. Lange was identified as the biological daughter of Cherry Rehbein (DOB: 12/13/1971), the wife of Stephen Rehbein (DOB: 11/02/1967).
A Medina County Chief Deputy and a Texas Ranger traveled to Corpus Christi, where both suspects were interviewed. During the interview, Lange confessed that she and Williams had killed her mother and stepfather and disposed of their bodies in a ravine.
This information was relayed to investigators in Medina County, who immediately began a search in the Medina Lake area. The search proved challenging due to nighttime conditions. After several hours, deputies located two large black garbage bags concealed in a deep ravine off FM 1283. The location was not visible from the roadway and was discovered through careful scene observation by a deputy.
With assistance from ESD Fire personnel, two bodies were recovered and transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
Cassandra Lange and Joby Williams were taken into custody and charged with Capital Murder of Multiple Persons for the murders of Stephen and Cherry. The two children, ages 6 years and 1 month, were placed with Child Protective Services and are being reunited with family members.
The initial call was received on 4/8/2026 at approximately 12:15 p.m., deputies arrived at the residence around 1:00 p.m., and the suspects were taken into custody at approximately 7:00 p.m. The swift coordination and diligent efforts of all agencies involved allowed this case to be rapidly developed and the suspects to be apprehended in a timely manner.
Cassandra Lange and Joby Williams remain in custody at this time. Lange’s bond has been set at $1,000,000 surety, and Williams’ bond has been set at $1,000,000 surety.
This investigation remains ongoing.
