[email protected] Based in HoodRiver, OR, The Fistula Project at Kitovu Hospital is an unaffiliated community group that strives to provide fistula repair and other assistance to women in Uganda. This is done through grassroots efforts, fundraising and awareness. Small groups of project participants travel to Uganda annually to dis
tribute blankets, hygiene kits, knitting and crochet supplies and to teach the women (fistula patients) how to knit and crochet. Your generous and contined efforts and contributions help The Fistula Project at Kitovu Hospital fulfill the following objectives:
- Fistula Repair Surgeries
- Hygiene Kit supplies (reuseable menstrua pads)
- Fabric for skirts and dresses for fistula patients
- Knitted and crocheted blankets for fistula patients
- Knitting and crochet supplies for fistula patients
- Education and awareness about fistula
Why knitting and crochet? Knitting and crochet is both an activity and distraction for the women while they await their surgeries and during recovery. It is also a skill that will enable the women to make clothing and household items for themselves and their families; as well as a means for generating income. Obstetric Fistula occurs during obstructed or prolonged labor which creates a tear between the vagina and bladderor rectum or both, often resulting in the death of the infant.
