South Shades Crest Elementary School

(9)

About the School South Shades Crest School opened in August, 1995 serving students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. A realignment plan, in 2018, provided South Shades Crest with the very unique opportunity to serve students from kindergarten through the second grade. We currently have approximately 360 students enrolled. South Shades Crest is committed to providing an academically challenging, quality education that includes multiple opportunities for students and staff to reach their fullest potential. Classes are self-contained with a student/staff ratio of approximately 19 to 1 in kindergarten and first grade with 20 to 1 in second. South Shades Crest Elementary School is an environment that is student centered. Our staff is dedicated to providing students opportunities that incorporates the curriculum and stretch beyond. Technology is integrated throughout the school day using Chromebooks and Chromeboxes. Special programs are available for children needing additional help as well as those needing academic enrichment. These programs include learning support, speech, art, music, physical education, and STEAM. Annual school wide events include a Fairy Tale Festival, Red Ribbon Week, Fifties Day, Polar Express Day, Book Fairs, Author Visits, Field Day, and STEAM Day.

SSC families,

We wanted to take a moment to highlight our sponsors. They supported us throughout the year, and now is our time to support them. As you know, many businesses have been classified as “non essential” and are unable to be open at this time. But many of our sponsors are still open for curbside/take out service. If you are able and willing, let’s show our support for them and our community.

Next Tuesday, April 7th was scheduled to be a spirit night at The Whole Scoop. Instead of a fundraiser for our school, we are asking that you still visit them for curbside service (They will bring your order to your car!) and thank them for supporting SSC during the school year. The businesses that have been so good to us are pictured.

Thank you, and we hope everyone is staying healthy at home. #flattenthecurve #stayhome

03/15/2020

Dear HCS,

School closure for K-12 public schools in Alabama was to begin on Thursday, March 19, per the executive order of the Governor. However, the HCS Board has chosen, out of an abundance of caution and concern for students and personnel, to close its schools effective Monday, March 16 through Monday, April 6.

All student absences from March 16 through April 6 will be excused. Of course, all school-related activities, including athletics, will be canceled during school closure.

Our leadership team is in the process of preparing additional resources that will address other questions* and concerns you might have. To prepare this information, all 12-month employees are asked to report to work on Monday, March 16.

We urge you to stay safe and follow the recommendations put forth by public health officials regarding coronavirus.

We will continue to keep you updated.

Sincerely,

Hoover City Schools

03/14/2020

Dear HCS Families,

Given cases of Coronavirus in Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey announced K-12 public schools will close effective end of the academic day, Wednesday, March 18. The call to delay closing until Wednesday was likely made to ensure parents can secure child care. Many parents do not need this extra time, and many of you are concerned about returning to school this upcoming week.

While school will be open Monday-Wednesday, March 16-18, any student absences will be excused. This allows you to make the best decision for your child without the penalty of an attendance issue. Faculty and staff will be present at their campuses Monday-Wednesday to support the education of your children if you choose to attend.

Thank you for your patience through this ever-changing and difficult time. Best to you and your family.

Dr. Kathy Murphy
Superintendent

“PINK SHIRT DAY” is here!!! On this national “Be KIND” day we will feature a Hoover resident leading the way at a very young age:

Meet Little Tristan Delroy Trotman

Tristan is a 7 year old, multicultural boy from Harlem, New York. His family decided to move south to be near other family members. He attends South Shades Crest Elementary School.

When Tristan was in first grade at SSC, he started the Kids Kind Club because he decided at “Free choice” one day that he wanted to do something nice. He wanted people to stop the bullying, stop the hate and be “nice” (all of his classmates signed the Kind Club pledge)! He recently introduced the Kids Kind Club to several other classes. Yes, he’s exhibited many talents, but the first was a need to be kind and nice to others because that’s his personal mission and he loves harmony and love, not discord.

Tristan has so many interests, the first is his love for his family, especially Mom, Manma, Tauntie, Uncle Bubbles, and his dog Lola. The second, is his intent to be one of the best kid Spartan racers ever, he’s very competitive, and actually won the race at Fenway Park this past November in Boston. He beat out quite a few big kids. In 3 short races, he’s earned 2 Trifecta medals and is planning to work on his third this April in Atlanta. Academically, he ranks at the 99th percentile for Global Scholar Scores and has a keen interest in social injustice. . .you should see some of the videos of what he thought about color and race at 5. He has some strong beliefs if he were to become president one day too. His recent thoughts about Martin Luther King day and our current environment says it all (see school work picture below where he encourages us all to “Put an end to the awful meanness”!).

Tristan is an avid learner and student of the game. He studies the greats on a regular basis: Steve PreFontaine, Rocky Balboa (ok fictional but inspiring), and mentoring words from the late Kobe Bryant. He also has the gift of being able to work out with his cousin, Lewis Sanders (an ex NFL defensive back) to learn more about skills of an athlete and their tricks of the trade.

Another main interest Tristan has is his love for baseball. Two of his uncles excelled in baseball and he often calls his Uncle Duaine for baseball guidance and advice. In addition to baseball, Tristan loves to run (this is probably his core physical skill) and he loves to run distance. His Mom nicknames him her little Forest, cause he just can’t get enough of it! He works every time to beat his best time and always continues to challenge himself.
In addition to all of this, he sees himself delivering important messages to change the world.
Little Tristan says “...[no person is better than the other ]- it doesn’t matter where you live, what you look like, what school you go to, whether you are a boy or girl - what matters MOST is that you are a good person”.

Little Tristan, we hope your “Be Kind Club” infiltrates school systems across the country. We are encouraged by our students like you-that help to move #HooverAHEAD.

If you know of local happenings across the city TODAY of people showing kindness, or a local Hoover resident that should be spotlighted on this national “BE KIND” day for their deeds, be sure to inbox us at [email protected].
