City Council Recap – Tuesday, May 26, 2026
Yesterday evening, Hopewell City Council held a productive meeting that included celebrating our business community, recognizing an outstanding employee, and taking action on several important resolutions impacting the City.
🏆 Recognizing Our Longstanding Business Community
Mayor Johnny Partin presented proclamations honoring 15 businesses that have continuously operated in the City of Hopewell for 50 years or more. These businesses represent the dedication, resilience, and community spirit that continue to shape Hopewell’s economy and identity.
👏 Employee of the Quarter
The Vision Committee recognized James Jones as the City of Hopewell’s Employee of the Quarter. Mr. Jones serves as the City’s GIS Manager, overseeing the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program that supports mapping, infrastructure planning, public safety coordination, data analysis, and many other essential City operations. Congratulations, Mr. Jones, and thank you for your service to the community!
🛣️ Right-of-Way Vacation Request Approved
Director of Development Chris Ward presented a right-of-way vacation application concerning the area between parcels 067-0015 and 073-0515. The applicant’s future land-use designation is Urban Residential and included a road dedication back to the City as part of the request. Council approved the motion unanimously, 6-0.
🌎 Resolution Supporting SELC Request
Council reviewed and approved a resolution supporting the Southern Environmental Law Center’s (SELC) request for additional studies and a public hearing regarding AdvanSix’s application to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to modify its Federal Clean Air operating permit. The resolution passed unanimously, 6-0.
🏘️ FY2026 Budget Amendment Approved
Deputy City Manager Stacey Jordan presented a resolution to amend the FY2026 budget in the amount of $397,000 to fund an operational audit of the Hopewell Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA). Funding sources include Unallocated Capital, Contingency Funds, and Fringe Benefit Savings. The resolution was approved unanimously, 6-0.
