With gratitude to our community (staff, police, students, parents/guardians, and teachers) for your care and responsiveness in taking seriously this threat and focusing on keeping our students and schools safe. Link to parent communications in the comments.

This afternoon, Hopkins High School received a phone call that was interpreted as a potential threat. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of students and staff inside, the high school was briefly placed in a secure hold.

We will continue to remain on scene as school staff completes their release procedures.

At this time, students and staff are safe and there is no larger threat to the community. If you have any questions about release procedures, please refer to the school’s email detailing their next steps.

Earlier this week there a news report circulated, claiming that a gun had been brought to West Middle School in February. This was NOT the case. I am grateful to all who work to keep our students and schools safe every day, and all in our community who showed care in responding to the report. Thank you to Hopkins Police Department for both your initial response, your ongoing service, and for your clarification regarding this situation. Any and all threats of violence, hate speech, or the like is unacceptable in our schools.

As our state legislators have just wrapped up the Spring session, I wanted to pause and give thanks for all those who lobby, who advocate, and who work hard to develop policies, funding structures and support, and laws to that seek to make our districts more sustainable, funded, just, and equitable…and all who—especially in this last session—lobbied so hard to protect our kids from gun violence (thank you Moms Demand Action - MN). I’m a believer in public education and its vital role in supporting a flourishing democracy. And it’s persistence and power for good is only made possible through the collective, so here’s in thanks for the generations who have done the work to bring us to now, and in hopes for what we can continue to build together!
