Su***de prevention is at the heart of our mission...but that doesn’t always look the way people think it will.
Sometimes it looks like helping a veteran keep the lights on.
It looks like making a rent payment before an eviction notice becomes homelessness. Helping someone navigate benefits when they don’t know where to turn. Finding transportation, connecting them with mental health care, or stepping in when one more unexpected expense feels like the last straw.
Crisis intervention is critical. It meets someone at the moment when they are already in danger.
The work of Scars & Stripe's is also about what happens before that moment.
Financial instability, housing insecurity, isolation, untreated mental health needs and the frustration of trying to navigate complicated systems can pile up. We work directly with veterans to reduce those pressures before hopelessness takes over.
That past-due bill on the kitchen table may not look like su***de prevention.
To the veteran sitting in front of it, it might be one more problem they don’t know how to solve.
And sometimes, helping solve that problem is where prevention begins.
On September 8th, we will be at the Arkansas State Capitol for the 988 + 1 Veterans Governor’s Challenge Event, joining leaders, agencies, veteran service organizations and community partners from across the state in strengthening su***de prevention and support for Arkansas veterans.
Intervention saves lives in moments of crisis.
Prevention works upstream to help keep veterans from reaching that moment.
That’s where Scars and Stripes is committed to doing our part — one veteran, one problem and one life at a time.
