Houstonians up in arms over Army Corps' 'old-fashioned' flood fixes

As the council member whose district includes Addicks and the surrounding neighborhoods, I too have concerns. It seems like some of these ideas should have been done years ago and others were not fully explored. We need to be creative and find innovative ways to deal with flooding.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Army-Corps-proposals-to-fix-Buffalo-Bayou-flood-15725805.php

Corps engineers released the interim report for the Buffalo Bayou and Tributaries Resiliency Study in October. The agency is asking for community feedback through Nov. 20 to shape a final proposal.

Big news about a project to help mitigate flooding: Today at Council we passed an interlocal agreement with Houston METRO and Harris County Flood Control District for the Langham Creek Conveyance Improvement Project.

This project consists of the preparation and delivery of a preliminary engineering study to improve the conveyance capacity of Langham Creek by modifying the Clay Road bridge over Langham Creek. The Clay Road Bridge (The Bridge) is currently the only location that provides for the flow of water from Langham Creek into the Addicks Reservoir. The current span of the Bridge does not adequately convey storm water from the approximately two-mile floodplain upstream of Clay Road into the downstream Addicks Reservoir contributing to upstream flooding in extreme events.

Houston/Galveston, TX

From AlertHouston:

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for most of Houston until 3:15 pm due to strong storms moving across the area.

Potential impacts from this storm include damaging winds, heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and quarter-sized hail.

People in the affected area are urged to seek shelter immediately in an interior room without windows and on the lowest floor of a building. People should bring their pets inside and delay travel or outdoor activities until the storm passes. If travel is unavoidable, reduce your speed to avoid hydroplaning. Heavy rains may also impact the area and only a few inches of water can float a vehicle. When you see water covering the road, Turn Around, Don't Drown®.

Today we celebrated the groundbreaking of Alabonson Park!! Commissioner Cagle is doing a wonderful job turning this once unused park space (with weeds and high grass) into an amazing park that will be a great asset for the entire community! Amenities for the 50.21 acres include: softball/baseball fields, a concession stand, community room, soccer fields, football fields, and trails. And lots of detention (it also connects to many more acres of county property for detention). Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner's Office

My statement about the proposed tax rate. I recognize the constraints of the City’s budget right now & understand the necessity to keep providing core services in a growing City; however, with so many people struggling right now, I just cannot add to this burden. While no time is a good time to increase taxes from the lowest rate it should be, this certainly is the worst time to do so. Full statement:
