The ringing in my ears never stops, a permanent reminder of the blinding flash that stole my honor and nearly took my best friend. They called it "handler error," tossing us aside like defective equipment while the scumbags who wired the trap grew fat on blood money. Now, sitting in the dark with my scarred reflection and a K9 who still trembles in his sleep, the fuse has finally been lit. Major, you thought you buried us in that rubble, but didn't you know explosives are what I do best?
Chapter 1: The Ash and the Echo
The smell of cordite and burnt copper always comes first.
Then, the blinding heat.
In the nightmare, I am always back in that suffocating concrete bunker. I can see the serial numbers on the C4 blocks. I can see the frayed, defective wiring that screamed of sabotage. And, most vividly of all, I can see Major Vance standing behind the reinforced glass observation window.
He wasn't panicking. He was smiling.
His thumb pressed down on the remote detonator.
BOOM.
My eyes snapped open. I practically threw myself upward, my chest heaving as I gasped for the stale, freezing air of my rundown apartment. Cold sweat clung to my shirt, stinging the massive, puckered burn scars that crawled up the entire left side of my neck and jaw.
"Easy, boss. Easy." I rasped, my throat raw.
A heavy, warm head rested against my knee. Havoc.
The seventy-pound Belgian Malinois looked up at me with eyes that were entirely too human. His left ear was missing a chunk, and a jagged scar ran down his hind legâshrapnel from the blast. He let out a low, comforting whine, though I could feel his back legs still trembling. He had the nightmares, too.
I buried my hands in his thick fur, grounding myself in the present.
The present was a miserable, rotting one-bedroom apartment in the slums of the city. Rain lashed against a cracked window pane, casting distorted shadows over the single piece of paper sitting on my cheap laminate dining table.
