Americans spend more than 50% of our income on housing + transportation. A wider variety of transit-oriented, mixed-use developments could free up more of our income for other things. Maybe some enjoy spending half their income on a home and transportation, but most would like to spend hard-earned dollars other ways...entertainment, charitable donations, dog toys or lattes might all be more fun.
