PURSE MYSTERY SOLVED đđ
A purse that had been lost for over 60 years was found at the old League City School building during renovations in 2021.
Based on some of the belongings, the purse dated back to 1959, and the owner was identified as Beverly Williams. Items found in the purse were photos of family and friends, notes, handkerchiefs, a wallet, and other memories from Williamsâ life. Armando Rodriguez, the contractor that found the purse, turned it into City officials in hopes of finding the owner.

These volunteers go the extra mile to help library staffâfrom preparing craft projects and shelving books, to planning and hosting library events. In fact, Helen Hall Library hosted more than 1,000 programs in the 2022 fiscal year! Without volunteers, the library couldnât bring all of these programs to our community. The City of League City, the League City Historical Society, and Clear Creek ISD partnered this week to produce a video featuring a mysterious item that was found by contractors renovating the League City Community Center.
The historic building was built in 1938 as the âLeague City Schoolâ and housed students from various grade levels from kindergarten through high school for over 80 years until it was scheduled to be demolished in the summer of 2021. League City staff members contacted CCISD and worked out an agreement to lease the building for $1 a year for the next 50 years and turn it into a Community Center.
During renovation work in early 2022, a wall that was covering up a former stage in the gymnasium was removed and the wood floor of the stageâwhich was in too poor of condition to be savedâwas removed and replaced with new wood. During the replacement process, a contractor found a small purse buried under the stage containing several items including old photos, a small notebook, a calendar, pencils, a nail file kit, and two handkerchiefs.
The purse and its contents were shared with members of the League City Historical Society who deduced that it belonged to a Clear Creek Jr High student named Beverly Williams who was around 14 or 15 in 1958 and was most likely visiting the school for a dance or basketball game. The LCHS would like to find Beverly or her surviving family members to receive permission to display the purse and its contents at their museum.
Watch the video to learn more and if you have any information about Beverly or her family members, email [email protected].
