HOPE Clinic's leadership recognizes such a disaster does not end when the rain subsides -- and patients’ needs will continue to shift as time wears on. “Even if we don’t see [patients] this week or next, we’re thinking and planning of the effects in a few months, in six months,” Green said. “We’re taking the marathon approach.”

July is BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Mental Health Awareness Month. In recognition of this month, we’re reflecting on an recent Let's Talk conversation between Marcy Melvin at The Hackett Center for Mental Health, and Dr. Aneela Khan at Asian American Health Coalition and HOPE Clinic, on the mental health stigma that affects the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The two explore the ongoing discrimination against AAPI communities and why cultural stigma makes it difficult to speak up and seek help. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to watch it again and share your thoughts below. https://www.facebook.com/1659713340975884/videos/381558546323331 Visit the Mental Health America website to find mental health resources for AAPI communities and other marginalized communities: https://www.mhanational.org/bipoc-mental-health
“In the Asian community, there is a culture to internalize things. We as a culture, we do not usually stand up and start speaking about negative things going on.” In our recent Let’s Talk series, Dr. Aneela Khan with the Asian American Health Coalition and HOPE Clinic shared the history behind mental health stigma in the Asian American Pacific Islander communities, and how recent incidents of anti-Asian hate in the U.S. have contributed to a growing number of mental health concerns. Watch the full conversation hosted by Marcy Melvin, Deputy Director at The Hackett Center for Mental Health: https://bit.ly/3gXnrch

Tune in Thursday, April 29 at 2 p.m. CT for Let’s Talk: Asian American Pacific Islander Communities & Mental Health. Over the past year, there have been 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian hate in the U.S., with 503 of those taking place in 2021 alone. Hateful language and stigma associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled these violent acts against Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, and many people in this community may be experiencing increased mental health concerns. Join Marcy Melvin, Senior Director of Health Equity Strategy at The Hackett Center for Mental Health and Dr. Aneela Khan, Community Behavioral Health Project Manager at Asian American Health Coalition of Houston and HOPE Clinic for a Q&A conversation around Asian American Pacific Islander communities and mental health. We’ll discuss the ongoing discrimination and violence against AAPI communities and how these experiences can lead to racial trauma; how the social stigma surrounding mental illness within AAPI cultures often makes it difficult to start conversations about mental health; and resources and actions we can take as allies to support our AAPI friends. https://fb.me/e/2bFvQG4Po
