Over the years, our work family at Talance Group has been impacted by cancer in more ways than we can count. Being recruiters, we are in the business of changing people's lives for the better. So, it hits us especially hard when we are powerless to do much outside of hurt for one another or pray. That's why our TG team and extended family have decided to join forces with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society(LLS) to FIRE CANCER!

LLS launches a Visionary of the Year fundraising campaign each year to help eradicate blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma. These funds also support vital research and clinical trials for many other cancers, including breast, lung, brain, pancreatic, and prostate.

We are in week 1 of our 10 week campaign but are behind where we need to be to hit our goal of 150k. PLEASE consider DONATING TODAY to help us catch up and save as many lives as we can!

HIRING MANAGERS ARE TAKING OUR ADVICE

We cannot stress how important it is for hiring managers to reach out to candidates after an offer is accepted.

Keeping that dialogue going with a new hire is CRUCIAL in our current market, especially if the candidate plans to give their current employer more than a 2-week notice.

A LOT CAN HAPPEN DURING THIS TIME!

WHAT HIRING MANAGERS SHOULD COVER ON THE CALL:

👉 Congratulate and welcome him/her on becoming a part of your team
👉 Answer any onboarding questions the candidate may have
👉 Share your cell phone # in case any questions come up prior to the start date
👉 Talk about first-day logistics and details (parking, arrival time, etc.)
👉 If local, invite the new hire to coffee/lunch to celebrate!

CONGRATS!

Now let’s talk about your FIRST 90 DAYS.

Here are a few things we advise our candidates heading into a new company…

✔Make ZERO ASSUMPTIONS- Walk in with “eyes and ears open” and withhold judgment during this time. Over the first 3 months, listen more than you talk, take lots of notes, and save demands or “special requests” for a later date. Your assessments on day 1 may be quite different by day 90 once you’ve had a chance to observe your team and how the company operates.

✔KEEP NEGATIVE OPINIONS to Yourself- Don't start out on the wrong foot by commenting negatively about how a process is done, how a system was set up, or by continually stating how something was done better at a former company. Your opinions may be valid, but trust must be earned before they will be received constructively.

✔ASK for FEEDBACK- This one can be tricky because there is a balance between asking too often and not at all. Check-in with your manager within the first 2 to 3 weeks and then a couple more times as you get closer to 60 and 90 days. Ask open-ended questions that require some thought versus simple “yes” or “no” responses.

Example Questions:

🟢How do you feel I’m doing so far in comparison to what you expected?

🟢What areas of the role do you feel I need to focus on more (or less)?

🟢What do you feel I am doing well?

🟢What do you feel I need to improve?

🟢On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate my performance so far, and why?

✔GIVE POSITIVE FEEDBACK- You will still be in assessment mode yourself, BUT everyone likes to hear something positive. Share it if you see someone going the extra mile or notice something impressive. Again, you don’t want to overdo the compliments, so tread lightly. We've found positivity trumps a complaint any day of the week!

If you are looking to hire in this highly competitive market but remain unwilling to consider contract candidates as an option, you may be leaving headache-relieving solutions on the table.

CONTRACT TO HIRE:

✔These candidates ARE PERM CANDIDATES in many cases. We’ve seen a surprising number of employees leave unfulfilling permanent jobs to accept contract-to-hire roles with better upside potential.

✔In this high turnover market, candidates who took some time off during Covid want to “try before they buy”. If they come back to work, they want to know they accepted the right role for them. Period.

✔A good recruiter can work with you to find someone that hits your skillset needs as well as to make sure the long-term culture and salary requirements match up BEFORE AN INTERVIEW TAKES PLACE.

CONTRACT/CONSULTING:

✔Can you lose the knowledge that a pure contractor brings to the table? Yes. Do you have to? Absolutely not! Most contract consultants like to do clean-up work, mentor others, improve processes, and can document all of it as they go. They enjoy leaving a role better than they found it, giving you a lighter load and shiny new desk procedures for the next person to follow!

✔An experienced consultant typically comes with a “solve the puzzle” attitude. Some have mastered a specific skill set, while others have worked within a variety of industries and have broad systems and accounting knowledge. Either way, they have proven themselves to get curious and figure things out with little to no handholding.

✔If your current team is overworked, a contractor can give them some much-needed breathing room to get them caught up. Your employees will appreciate that management invested in bringing in someone who can help without being a threat to their job in the long run. RETENTION is KEY. The cost of a short-term contractor seems high until you compare it to losing a top performer due to burnout!

[Yes, we have witnessed this.]

Don’t burn bridges with your manager/company!

Majority of us are either 100% remote or hybrid.

Still, it is NOT okay to resign via email.

Houston is big, but not that big.
You want to keep that bridge open.

Resign in person.
When you cannot physically be there, resign via video call.

Don’t tarnish the relationship you built with your manager/ company
with one email.

Resigning is never easy.

Here are 5 tips to make resigning as painless as possible:

☑️Hand your boss a resignation letter
(Put it in writing)

☑️Talk about how you have valued the experience at your current company
and that you hope your manager feels the same way.

☑️ Avoid giving reasons you are leaving.
(If they think something can be done to keep you, they will zero in on that)

☑️Tell them it is a personal decision
and that you hope they will understand.

☑️Let them know you have been thinking about this for a long time,
and have talked about it with your spouse/family, mentors, etc.

7 Things to Do When You are NOT Looking for a Job:

1. UPDATE YOUR RESUME: Even if you are happy as a lark with your current role, it is a smart practice to keep a list of any new duties or responsibilities that can be added to your resume if necessary.

2. WRITE DOWN WINS: Keep a pad of paper in your desk or on your phone where you can jot down details about projects you are on, processes you have improved, "thank you’s" you have received and why you received them. These will come in handy when preparing for your next interview (next month or 3 years from now)!

3. GAIN “DREAM” ROLE EXPERIENCE: Take some time to look online and see which roles interest you. Look at the details and responsibilities along with requirements. Take the initiative in your current role to seek out experience, learn a new software, etc., that aligns with that future role!

4. STAY CONNECTED: We know some people really hate LinkedIn, but we encourage you to at least have a page, keep it up to date, and use it to connect with people you work with or have worked with previously. It will make staying in touch with people you’ve met through business or networking events easier as well.

5. REFERENCES MATTER: Know who your references would be and make sure to have their up-to-date contact information.

6. FIND A TRUSTWORTHY RECRUITER: Find a good recruiter that keeps up with what is happening in the market and knows what an ideal opportunity looks like to you!

7. BE OPEN TO INTERVIEWING: Yes, even when you aren’t ready to move. It may sound silly, but you will never know when a great opportunity is in your hands unless you go find out! If it’s not right, you at least keep your interviewing skills polished and ready for the right one!

Majority of interviews are still virtual, at least for the 1st round.

Don’t mistake these interviews as being casual.

Top 10 virtual interview tips:

💻 Dress to impress.
💻 Have a clean & clutter-free background. Make sure the room is well-lit.
💻 Do NOT interview from your car or a restroom (yes, this has happened).
💻 Interview from a laptop, not a phone (If given no choice, prop your phone up for the interview and inform other parties in advance.)
💻 No pets, kids, or other distractions.
💻 Turn off all computer/phone alerts!
💻 Position the camera from the shoulders up and at eye level to avoid looking down.
💻 Make sure you have access to Teams/Zoom before the interview. Do a practice run with someone.
💻 Establish eye contact; look directly at the camera, not the screen.
💻 Exchange info at the start of the interview in the event of technical issues.
