Hope for the Exiled: Strength for the Weary

Are you tired? Exile can be exhausting. Many of the exiles were angry. Why would God let them go through this much difficulty? Do you ever wonder that today? Isaiah wrote to the weary people of Israel to offer them comfort. Like the Psalmist we studied last week, he calls upon us to “put our hope in God.” Who is this God in whom we hope? Isaiah paints a powerful portrait. Put. Your. Hope. In. God. He is incomparable! Welcome to worship with Tallowood at 8:45 and 11:15 AM.

We are currently in Phase Two of ReGathering. Register for Preschool Care at https://www.tallowood.org/preschool-ministry-sunday-classes-and-health-questions/

What is our claim to fame? The Greeks prided themselves in their tradition of wisdom. After all, they produced Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. When Paul arrived in Corinth he decided not to try to impress the people with his intellect, but to focus on Christ, the source of true wisdom. Their faith did not rest on human understanding but God’s power. In this season, one of my prayers has been that God would give us uncommon wisdom. Opinions abound. “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” Where do we find true wisdom? The Holy Spirit reveals wisdom to those who love God. This wisdom leads us to maturity and unity.

Are you scared? What frightens us most today? Is it the threat to our health or our wealth? Is it concern over what authorities may do or may not do? Is it that others may harm us? When the early believers continued the words and work of Jesus they encountered extreme opposition from the religious authorities. When they were threatened they prayed an interesting prayer. Instead of saying, “God make them leave us alone,” they said, “God make us bold.” So God did. Through the Holy Spirit God answered their prayer, seismically.

A divided world needs a united church. What is the basis of our unity at Tallowood? When Tallowood regathers in the worship center for worship again, we will reunite as a diverse membership with members from all six inhabited continents. We will also bring with us a wide range of experiences as well as various opinions about the pandemic and the economic challenges in our world. The polarized water of our culture is in our boat. Because we belong to Christ and his church we commit ourselves to care for each other well. We sacrifice our rights and our opinions and submit to each other out of love for Christ. The source of our unity is not political opinions, economic status, race, education level or musical preferences. Only the Holy Spirit can take people of all backgrounds and bring them together as one body of believers. He has done it before. He can do it again. Will we make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace? Welcome to worship with Tallowood!

What we need is to get back to the way it was, right? Peter remembered how to fish if preaching didn’t work out. So he went backward to the familiar profession of the past. Then right on God’s Standard Time, he experienced a resurrection recall. Christ called Peter out of his guilty past into a bright future. Once before Jesus found him fishing. But that was before his failure and denial of Jesus. Can we believe Jesus invites a second time, “Follow me!” How will we answer? Welcome to online worship with Tallowood on Sunday at 10 AM.

Tallowood News 3/19/20:

Worship
Sunday Worship Online – 10 AM - Sermon by Duane Brooks: "Believing is Seeing: Staying Connected" (John 15:1-17)
How can we be the church when we can’t go to church? How do we stay connected in a time of social distancing? Jesus helps us. In his seventh “I am “ saying he tells us, “I am the true vine. You are the branches.” Every believer is connected to Christ. And if we are connected to Christ, we are also connected to each other, no matter what. Welcome to worship with Tallowood!
