Hello, Friend!

This was my campaign page (I lost in the runoff-BIG thank you to everyone that helped!♥️) & before that it was my City Council at-large political page (thank you for my time at City Hall; it was a privilege.) It has been static, but I’m thinking about what to do here.

There is a Melissa Noriega personal page where I post quite a bit; please head there.

Thank you for visiting. ☺️

Broken Trust: Texas’ huge school endowment pays out less and less for schoolchildren

This is just jaw-dropping.

We need to figure out what it costs to educate a student from Pre-K (universal, please) to 12th grade & PAY FOR IT. A Chevy/Ford version, not a Lexus; the more affluent districts can kick in for French IV teachers...stop robbing Peter to pay Paul, stop dumping it on the backs of local property owners.

Texans are the most important asset we have...NOT oil & gas and not the medical industry. PEOPLE. This isn’t some do-goodnik, pie in the sky talk - this is ECONOMICS. The American Dream starts with education and that is the key to prosperity for all of us.

Teachers buying supplies for kids. Firing librarians, nurses, counselors. 30 kids to a classroom. It’s no wonder our schools struggle - they are at their wit’s end with a system that systematically underfunds while raising expectations for test scores. And then this is how our (OUR) funds are handled? For shame.

Texas is better than this.

The Permanent School Fund has failed to match the performance of peer endowments, missing out on as much as $12 billion in growth and amassing a risky asset allocation, a yearlong Houston Chronicle investigation reveals.

Melissa Noriega for Texas State Representative District 145

Melissa Meisgeier Noriega has spent her adult life in public service. She has worked in East End neighborhood organizations, including the Eastwood Civic Association and her SuperNeighborhood, non-profits, as an at-large Council member, as a state legislator, and especially in working 27 years for the Houston Independent School District (HISD). She left HISD as a manager of Professional Development and Leadership Training in 2007, after winning the Position 3 At-large seat in a Houston city council run-off election in June. After Council, she continued to volunteer and work in her community.

City Council and Career

Her time at HISD was followed by the then three allowed terms as a city-wide member of the Houston City Council, where she served as Chair of Public Safety and Chair of Infrastructure, Transportation & Technology, as Co-chair of the Census Complete Count Committee, and Co-chair of the winning City Bond Election Campaign in 2012.

She has served as VP of Policy and Partnerships at BakerRipley since December 2015, and is active on the board of New Hope Housing, former Chair of the East End Foundation/Cultura, a Cultural District partner, and has served on the executive board of her SuperNeighborhood. She was part of the leadership team that opened the NRG shelter after Hurricane Harvey, and has worked with the regional efforts since, assisting in the city and county restoration and recovery.
