DELPHIANS RECOGNIZE MEMBER
FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AT
AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIP EVENT
Houston Assembly of Delphians honored long-time member Barbara Klopfenstein for her leadership and service to the Delphians, an organization dedicated to intellectual enrichment, social enhancement and philanthropic endeavors. Ms. Klopfenstein was President in 1985-86, has held every office and has chaired the Gala on two occasions. The award was presented by Delphian President Sunny Carpenter, at the Awards and Installation luncheon held Saturday, May 11, at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel Shamrock Room.
This annual event presents and awards Delphian Scholars, chosen on the basis of academic success, good character and financial need. The 2017 class included twelve continuing and four graduating scholars, representing a long tradition of Delphian assistance, beginning with the first scholarship in 1930. Since that time, the Delphians have provided more than $1.5 million for over 500 scholarships and other gifts to the UH and UHD communities.
Special grants were presented to twenty three university departments and colleges at both the University of Houston and the U of H Downtown.

TWO LOCAL DELPHIAN CHAPTERS EXPLORE
MEMORIAL PARK CONSERVANCY MASTER PLAN

Members of two Northwest chapters of the Houston Assembly of Delphians
were introduced to the recent Master Plan for Memorial Park on Wednesday,
March 23rd. Conservation Director, Nicolas Butler provided a comprehensive
and congenial history of the park, introducing the group to its largely
unknown
usage for training of soldiers during WW I - thus the name Memorial Park.

Mr. Butler presented large aerial photographs taken of Memorial Park,
military
Camp Logan, pre-drought tree canopy, post-drought canopy and the Master Plan
in
progress, and discussed the usage of this park, twice the size of Central
Park in
New York. He then guided the group's precinct bus through the park, pointing
out
the areas of change in progress, the thirty miles of hiking trails, and many
of
the young native trees recently planted.

Delphian chapters meet all over greater Houston, providing ongoing learning
for
Women through bi-monthly seminars (such as a current seminar on Memorial
Park),
and dedicating themselves to providing scholarships for deserving students
at the
University of Houston and U of H/downtown. For more information, visit

Why Delphians do what we do...

When sending a sizable donation for the scholarship fund a former scholar wrote these words:..."I was the beneficiary of a wonderful Delphian Scholarship at the University of Houston beginning with my sophomore year in 1972 through my senior year in 1975. My mother was a widow following the death of my dad when my twin brother and I were only 23 days old. My mom, who was a very independent woman, felt that education was of the utmost importance and she encouraged me to apply for your scholarship.
...I am forever grateful to the women of your organization that made my undergraduate education possible and which allowed me to continue my education into law school and beyond...”
