#Stand4Service, because it makes a different in our community! Our Harris County Foster Grandparents served over 70,000 hours mentoring and tutoring children in need last year. As we recover from COVID-19, their support is needed now more than ever.

BREAKING: A new TargetPoint Consulting poll finds that voters overwhelmingly support increasing the investment in
AmeriCorps and Senior Corps to help the nation recover from COVID-19.

Congress should #Stand4Service and include the funding and provisions of the CORPS Act in the next stimulus bill.

Texoma Council of Governments

This is totally awesome. Talk about #livingthevision!

As you know we administer the Senior Corps Foster Grandparents program here in Texoma. These volunteers make all sorts of differences in the lives they touch - especially the children.

One of those volunteers received this super sweet hand-written note from the parent of a local kindergarten student who happens to attend class at a school which this volunteer serves at:

====
(Names removed to protect identity)

"Mrs. [FGP Volunteer],

[Student] started Kindergarten wanting to know how to read. The only way I could get her into the room without dragging her was the promise of learning to read. You have helped make that a reality. She talks about the time you spend helping her. She says you are like her grandma and talks about how much she loves you.

Thank you for loving our little girl and for being much more than a teacher. We are so blessed to have you in her life.

With Love,
[Student's Mother]"

“It’s really a privilege to do this work,” adds Dr. Wood, now 86 years old. “By the end of August we look to have created a workable model to this program.”
"He explains that by doing this, seniors are developing their legacy and leaving valuable lessons that will help younger people thrive and so on."

Young and old come together through poetry.

We launched an intergenerational pilot program called Excavating Wisdom in collaboration with AARP. The program consists of a series of workshops where seniors and youth will share their experiences and learn how to capture them through poetry. Ultimately the goal is to give seniors a renewed sense of purpose and connection.

Learn how the seniors share their life journey and help younger generations prepare for the future with valuable life lessons.

Great news to see Senior Corps Programs expand across the United States. Thank you, RSVP volunteers, for addressing community needs from tutoring youth to disaster relief!

We are growing! The Corporation for National and Community Service announced last week that 5.3 million dollars was being awarded to fund the expansion of RSVP across the United States. Fifty new communities will receive funding, which will support 7,700 new volunteers. In Texas, we will be growing by 3 new RSVP projects. These grants total almost $300,000 and will support 390 volunteers, in mostly new Texas counties. Congratulations to the recipients of these grants: Central Texas Opportunities, North Texas Council of Governments and The Arc of Texas!
