In a country where extreme contrasts of wealth and poverty coexist in everyday life, we hear hopeful stories of India’s rise and rapid growth. Yet 800 million people – more than the entire population of Africa – live on less than two dollars per day in India. Amid the tragic devastation caused by the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee recognized the need for a philanthropy platform that would connect the world’s two largest democracies and provide a trusted bridge for meaningful participation in India’s democratic and economic growth for both Americans and Indians. The American India Foundation has since built on this vision and created countless opportunities for India’s poor to live successful, productive lives while creating impactful change at an unprecedented scale, changing the lives of more than 3.1 million of India’s less fortunate.

Yesterday marked the end of eleven years of service and philanthropy under the Ek Disha Foundation banner. Our work will continue as we join the American India Foundation and reincarnate into the AIF Houston Chapter. It's an opportunity to engage more people and amplify our scale to work toward a poverty-free India. The Ek Disha Foundation has always supported projects that create measurable impact and sustainable change, and while we look back at our accomplishments with much pride, we also recognize that our scale was limited with our volunteer run organization. Building the India we all wish to see is a shared responsibility between our supporters, our partners, our board of directors, and the many individuals who lead and inspire with focused, purposeful, and impactful philanthropy every day. We could not have arrived at this day without the unwavering support and leadership of our board of directors - Jay Kumar Aiyer, Irum Javed, Paula Harris, Sippi Khurana, Huan Le, Jyoti Malhan, Sneha Merchant, founder Rick Pal, T. Paresh N. Patel, and Mika Rao Kalapatapu, many of whom will continue their service through the AIF Houston Chapter. Special congratulations to Swati Narayan, who has been invited to serve on AIF's national board.

In today's increasingly interconnected and complex world, the need for continuous innovation, creativity, and community is stronger than ever. We thank you for your past support and look forward to your continued commitment in our journey to creating a poverty-free India in the years to come.

Ek Disha Foundation Presents the Intelligent Breast Exam (iBE)

The Ek Disha Foundation has joined forces with UELifesciences to provide breast cancer scans to tens of thousands of women in India using the revolutionary Intelligent Breast Exam (iBE). This innovative hand held radiation free tool is painless and provides immediate results at the point of care. This FDA US patented tool can be used anywhere by a health care worker, bringing technology and peace of mind to women in rural areas. The iBE has gone through numerous clinical trials and with funding from Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the Unitus Seed Fund, and the support of other NGOs, foundations, and Indian state governments, 7-8 million women will soon be scanned, making this the world’s largest detection initiative. Houston has the unique opportunity to meet the founder of UELifescience’s Mihir Shah, on October 25. We invite you to come to Ek Disha Foundation’s annual community Lunch and Learn event and hear how the iBE is changing the landscape of breast cancer diagnosis and detection. In India, nearly one in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer die from a lack of early detection and treatment. That is about to change with iBE, because Mihir Shah and UELifesciences believe that everyone deserves a lifetime.

The "Lunch and Learn with Mihir Shah" is complimentary, but you must register to attend. Please click here to sign up: https://ekdishafoundation-presents-ibe.eventbrite.com

Screen Asia: "SOLD: Human Trafficking is Modern Slavery"

We have partnered with Asia Society Texas Center to host a screening of "SOLD", a powerful movie, directed by Academy Award winner Jeffrey Brown, and produced by Emma Thompson. It tells the unforgettable story of a girl who risks everything for freedom after being trafficked from her mountain village in Nepal to a brothel in India. This film gives voice to the millions of children who disappear every year to trafficking, serving as both a call to action and as a testament to the power and resilience of the human spirit. The film provides a revealing glimpse into a world seldom seen by outsiders - a world that is all too often, much closer to home than we might want to admit - even living here in Houston. A panel discussion will follow. Please join us on September 15 at 7PM.

GOONJ

Floods continue to ravage northeastern states of Assam and Bihar in India. Scores have died and over five million people have been affected, including being displaced, stranded in their homes, or suffering damage to their crops, land or livelihood. Our partner GOONJ is onsite helping with relief efforts. If you want to help, please visit http://www.ekdisha.org/donate/index.html and select "Goonj - Flood Relief" from the drop-down. As always, 100% of your donation will be sent to help those in need.

"I know a few KG of rice or a few blankets cannot recover even a part of what people have lost but somehow this is what is the need of the hour and this is where we the common citizen can play an important role.. my sincere thanks to people who responded to our earlier communication.. Sharing this picture.. Floods situation is grim.. Its time to act now !! Let us see what our collective effort can do.." -Anshu Gupta

With a bit of sadness.. we wonder why the devastating floods in Assam, Bihar, WB and other states and the millions who have lost everything, hasn’t got much attention from all around..

6 trucks of immediate relief supplies (comprehensive relief kits) have already been sent by Goonj ..The need of the hour is certainly much more..

Few more recent pics from from our project partner - Projects with Underserved Communities - India team from The University of Texas at Austin. The building is almost done. It will be used as a child's daycare center, women's healthcare center, and community meeting area. The toilet will be used by the Anganwadi teacher to teach young children to use toilets.

These students spent a month in India working on this. As you can imagine, summer heat was brutal especially under their tough living conditions in rural Andhra Pradesh. However they loved the experience and will not trade it for anything. Here's what one of the students (Alex Bi) wrote - "This was a huge growing experience for me. I grew as a leader and communicator. I overcame physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. I overcame challenges and learned that I am actually a little tougher than I thought. I grew closer to my team members and made many genuine connections with the local community members. I saw many different levels of Indian society, ranging from the villages, to the towns, to the metropolitan cities. And lastly, I once again saw how privileged of a life I have. I can only hope that I gave back to India as much as India gave to me."

Sharing an update from our project partner - Projects with Underserved Communities - India team from The University of Texas at Austin. They are on site building an Anganwadi center in the village of Nasampalli in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The building will serve as children’s daycare and training center and women’s healthcare service center.

In the last two days, we have had many productive meetings with people involved in the project. CASA has been helping mobilize community members to help with construction. We met with the Anganwadi teacher in Nasampalli and discussed the design for the Anganwadi. We are now working on finishing the columns and filling the foundation.

All of us have been learning bits of Tamil and Telugu, which are the languages spoken by the community members. We had a lot of fun playing frisbee and volleyball with the children yesterday. Even the contractor joined in! Everything has been a blast so far. We are still adjusting to the heat, but we are in good spirits and the project is moving along!
