The Mr. J. era has come to an end… The last five years have been full of so much love and wonderful music. Room 413 has seen our tears and our laughter, and there were more good days than not. Hold on to the happy memories, forget anything Mr. J. ever said during concert week, and remember that you were part of something so special! I will miss this place and its people but looking forward to new adventures with former Pandas at HSPVA! Stay tuned for the link to our spring show and an announcement about your new director. Mr. J. signing off! ✌🏾

So grateful that all six choirs were able to stop by Room 413 on the last day of this truly bizarre school year. Resiliency and flexibility were the names of the game, and everyone deserves a pat on the back for pushing through. Enjoy your summer, do NOT think about school, and recharge for the fall when we will all have to relearn what normal feels like. No matter where you go or what you do, keep singing!

After five years as Director of Choirs at Pershing Middle School, I will be joining the vocal department at Houston ISD’s Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). This was not an easy decision, but “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough!” This is an exciting opportunity to work with student musicians from all over the city of Houston! I look forward to seeing many former Pandas and maintaining that connection in the years to come. Even with this news, please remember that school isn’t over yet, and we still have music to make. Let’s do this, Pandas! ❤️Mr. J!

✨TMEA IN 2 DAYS✨

Our concert concludes with Jacob Narverud’s “Be the Change” with a chorus that sings, “fighting out loud for peace, for justice, for hope, for love, for change.” This piece serves as the framework of our TMEA concert with each song embodying a word of the chorus.

“A new beginning for a world stained by hate; hope for all the human race.” May it be so.

✨TMEA IN 2 DAYS✨

Our fourth piece, “Ukuthula”, is an African prayer for peace. The song originated in churches in the townships of pre-democratic South Africa. In the Zulu text led by soloist Victoria M., “Ukuthula” (we find peace), “Usindiso” (we are saved), and “Ukunqoba” (we will conquer).

It has been said that those who sing pray twice. Through this song, we lift our petition for peace to the heavens. 🙏🏾

✨TMEA IN 3 DAYS✨

Our commissioned piece, “Stardust”, was written by Spelman grad and Atlanta-based composer, B.E. Boykin. Using a poem penned by Pershing’s own creative writing teacher and fellow Spelman grad, Brittny Ray Crowell, Ms. Boykin’s setting of “Stardust” is an earnest offering that pulls from Virgina Hamilton’s collection of folktales “The People Could Fly”. In a story passed down through generations, we learn that African people once had wings to fly, but enslavement took away their magic. By saying the words “Kum buba yali, k*m buba tambe”, the enslaved people were able to fly to freedom.

In Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, he describes negative peace as the “absence of tension” and positive peace as the “presence of justice.” It is our hope that “Stardust” fills a void, not only in the choral canon, but in the hearts of all who hear it and might be stirred to call for justice in America... not only for Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, but for all the people of color taken from this world before their time and without concern for their humanity.

✨TMEA IN 4 DAYS✨

Our concert begins with “Music Down In My Soul” by New Orleans composer Moses Hogan. The spiritual’s ethereal opening moments underscore the hope we find from six simple words: “There must be a God somewhere.” Section leader Victoria M. alongside Carolina P. triumphantly march the choir to the heavens during the call and response.

Our second piece, Mark Miller’s “I Choose Love”, begins with a solo performed by second soprano section leader Caroline P. This piece was written in response to the shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, and the text eloquently reminds us that even in the midst of pain, we can still choose love. Amen and amen.

Tonight the 2021 Treble Chorale will record their TMEA Concert that will stream to music educators all over Texas next month. They have worked tirelessly for this concert, but the invitation to perform never would have happened without the hard work and magnificent singing of the two choirs that came before them. To every member of the 2019 and the 2020 Treble Chorale: We stand on your shoulders today. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you will always be a valued part of the Pershing Choir story. We’ll carry you in our hearts as we take the stage tonight! 💜💜💜

Treble Chorale met a living composer today! As they performed the piece that B.E. Boykin wrote for them, the mutual love was palpable. Our singers saw themselves reflected in the person who wrote their commissioned piece for TMEA, and today’s rehearsal was a dream come true. We cannot wait to share this work of art with the world on February 13! 💜💜💜 @_klavia

Happy 2021, Pandas!!! We never could have guessed that UIL last March would be our final performance for the year! We have endured so much, and hopefully 2021 will bring us a little closer to something normal. Your perseverance and willingness to keep moving forward during this pandemic has been inspiring! Enjoy your last few days of break! See you online and in person next week, choir!

Somehow... under the most insane and unimaginable circumstances, we ran our TMEA concert today. Are we ready? No. Would we be ready if this had been a normal semester? Also no. But... that means somehow we’re right where we should be, and THAT is because of the hard work and dedication of 33 extraordinary young musicians. Proud is not the word. Keep it up, Chorale!

Is two-thirds of our choir at home? Yes. Do we sound like we’re singing in a box? Definitely. Are we making slow and steady progress toward our goal? For sure! Way to go, Treble Chorale! Shout out to our in-person and at-home singers who are putting in the work to make our TMEA dreams come true!

Be a part of Pershing Choir's TMEA Story!, organized by Marcus Jauregui

Hello, Choir Families! As you know, Women's Chorale received an invitation to perform at our state convention in February 2021. We will soon find out whether the convention will take place in-person or virtually, but our composer needs to get started on our commissioned piece of music immediately so that she has time to complete it and we have time to learn it. Our campus funds are tied up at the moment, and we don't have a booster club, so we are turning to social media! Mr. J. and Mrs. Shupe want to give the kids the closet thing to a normal school year, and having this project to work on is definitely something to look forward to! All donors will be listed in our program! #pershingstrong

Through the hard work and dedication of the 2019 and 2020 Pershing Middle … Marcus Jauregui needs your support for Be a part of Pershing Choir's TMEA Story!

School doesn’t start for a few more weeks, but Mr. J. and Mrs. Shupe are hard at work getting our interactive virtual classroom ready for you, Pandas! This school year will be different, but we will still learn and we will still make wonderful music together! You will have a lot of screen time starting in September, so if you can, spend some time outside in the coming weeks or find a non-screen related activity!

Each year, thousands of Texas music educators convene in San Antonio for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. In addition to offering outstanding professional development, music ensembles from schools throughout the state are invited to perform. Annually, over 150 choirs from all over Texas submit to perform at our state convention, and approximately 10 choirs are selected from middle school to high school. We are honored to announce that the Pershing Middle School Women’s Chorale has been invited to perform in February 2021! This is a first for Pershing Middle School and the first time a middle school from Houston ISD has been invited since 1983! Congratulations to the 2019 and 2020 members of Women’s Chorale whose voices helped us get here!

I saw a tweet that read “Resistance is NOT a one lane highway. Maybe your lane is protesting, maybe your lane is organizing, maybe your lane is counseling, maybe your lane is art activism, maybe your lane is surviving the day. // Do NOT feel guilty for not occupying every lane. We need all of them.”

It has always been my mission to use music to light a fire in each and every student who walks through my classroom. Together, my friends, we can change the world. Speak out! Sing out! Make your voice heard! #blacklivesmatter
