Message from Scott Mellott: Sadly 2020 is a record year of the most FF Retired and Active deaths since I have been keeping track since 2005.
October was the first time there were 11 FF deaths in one month and only 3 months had 10 in one month since 2005.
2020 was not good for us, we lost a lot of great firefighters including four In The Line Of Duty.

Research shows that fire fighters are more likely to be diagnosed with certain types of cancer than the general public – a trend that the IAFF and FCSN are working to reduce. Look for targeted education about best practices and resources to reduce the impact of cancer on fire fighters throughout January. #ReducetheRisk

The City of Houston has a clear opportunity to fortify our public safety resources in the Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic response. The City has received more than $400 million in federal CARES Act aid. Contrary to the City Hall rhetoric, the U.S. Treasury Department guidance issued on April 22, 2020 confirms that CARES Act funding can be applied to eligible emergency medical response expenses, including emergency medical transportation, related to COVID-19. In addition to the operational costs of equipment and supplies (which should include personal protective equipment or PPE), payroll, overtime, and hazard pay are also considered operational costs. Here's Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin further clarifying the situation.
In this short video, Houston firefighters urge you to stay home and help "flatten the curve" in the COVID-19 pandemic response. Thank you.
Thanks, Houstonian and civic leader Doug Smith for your support of Houston firefighters at the City Council meeting on Tuesday.
Many thanks to the community leaders and supporters who helped the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association Charitable Foundation donate 55 FAST rescue boards for use on HFD ladder, HazMat and rescue trucks. The boards, which were originally designed for rapid intervention teams (RITs), often are deployed in technical rescue, water rescue, mass casualty, and active shooter incidents. The $103,000 donation was funded by proceeds from the Foundation's annual Red Hot Gala.

Here's another example of how Mayor Sylvester Turner is making up the Prop B rules as he goes. No matter what he said today, Turner is at courthouse, seeking to have Prop B declared "unconstitutional." He wants to kill Prop B, not implement it. #FollowTheMoney
As this video shows, city expenditures totalling more than $396 million are not reviewed by the city controller's office. Tens of thousands of expenditures less than $50,000 are under the control of appointees of Mayor Sylvester Turner. Combined with the mayor's refusal to fully open the city books, it raises questions about his claims about city finances and his refusal to implement Proposition B. #FollowTheMoney
While Mayor Sylvester Turner and his pay-to-play political patrons enjoy another “trade” junket, HPFFA President Marty Lancton shows how easy it is to swear in HFD fire academy graduates. Imagine if the mayor was as focused on rebuilding HFD as he is on punishing firefighter families, including these new firefighters. Since announcing a city hiring “freeze,” the mayor has hired more than 200 police and civilian employees. These days, it’s only cold in HFD. #frostbite
"WHO'S MY LAWYER?" Houston City Council Member Michael Kubosh lowers the boom on Mayor Sylvester Turner and the city attorney as they justify their continuing political and legal war on Houston firefighter families.
On behalf of Houston's 4,000 firefighters, HPFFA President Marty Lancton and HBFA President Delance Shaw offer best holiday wishes to the city.
A voice of reason: Houston attorney Nyanza L. Moore is right. Firefighters are grateful that voters supported us on Prop B. When Mayor Sylvester Turner quits focusing on vindictively punishing firefighters, we’ll be ready to discuss implementation of Prop B, like the voters ordered.
Some lucky Houston voters are encountering the Dancing Prop B Firefighter at polling locations - like here at Galena Park. He'll be around town through Election Day. Thanks for the support, Houston!
