Ryan is the nominee for US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas. Ryan was raised in West Houston and Katy, and graduated from Katy-Taylor High School.
He attended Baylor University, where he served as Vice President of the Student Body during his junior year and graduated in 2001 with honors. In 2006, Ryan graduated from South Texas College of Law and went to work for the Harris County District Attorney. On August 24, 2012, Governor Perry appointed Ryan to the 177th District Court, and on November 6th, Ryan was elected to a four year term. Currently, Ryan is the youngest District Court judge in the State of Texas. After graduating from Baylor, and before attending law school, Ryan worked for the mayoral campaign of Orlando Sanchez in 2001 and Kyle Janek’s Texas Senate campaign in 2002. Ryan then worked for the Harris County Republican Party serving as the Political Director until enrolling at South Texas College of Law in 2004. At South Texas, Ryan was nationally recognized as a top mock trial advocate, won awards locally and nationally, and was inducted into the prestigious Order of Barristers. During law school he could be heard filling in on KSEV for his dad, Lt Governor-elect Dan Patrick. In 2006, Ryan was sworn in as Assistant District Attorney. Ryan served in the Justice Courts, Juvenile Courts, as a Chief in the Misdemeanor Division, and in numerous felony District Courts. In 2008, Ryan was promoted to the Special Prosecutions Bureau. There, Ryan exclusively investigated and prosecuted drunk driving fatalities in Harris County. Ryan has been recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving three times for his success in this field. Ryan finished his career with the District Attorney assigned to the Major Offenders Division within Special Prosecutions, where he handled narcotics trafficking and money laundering prosecutions and also oversaw the prosecution of Houston area “pill mills” and “doctor shopping.” In addition, Ryan worked with the S.T.A.R. drug court. S.T.A.R. court is an intense probation which provides a place to live, addiction treatment, job skills and social support from numerous agencies. As a prosecutor, Ryan handled thousands of cases, and tried over 50 jury trials, including many high profile drunk driving fatalities. In 2011, Ryan secured a life sentence on a 1985 cold case murder. Ryan is married to Kellie, an Aggie and former elementary school teacher in Cy-Fair, who now stays at home with their six year old son, Zachary, and two year old daughter McKinley. Ryan volunteers as President of his neighborhood homeowners’ association. Additionally Ryan has his private pilot’s license and is a SCUBA diver. Ryan is a member in the Houston Bar Association, Galveston Bar Association, Christian Legal Society, American Judges Association, and Houston Young Lawyers Association.
