Hearth House at Project Row Houses

Hearth House at Project Row Houses A Traveling Exhibit, co-curated by Toni Tipton-Martin & Luanne Stovall Hearth House honors the African American cooks who nourished generations of American families with meals prepared at the fireside hearth.

These wise servants nurtured spirits, salved wounds, developed character, and created masterpieces from humble ingredients, often while working outside of the home. They whisper wisdom through prized recipes handed down by word of mouth. When we embrace their gifts of dignity, courage and perseverance we too are inspired to keep the hearth fires burning. “Apron Strings” Conversations rekindle kitchen tales from unsung culinary heroines of the 3rd and 4th Wards at Hearth House on the third Saturday of April and May. A Peace Through Pie pie social celebrates Juneteenth and encourages everyone to become a “Pie-O-neer” for peace, one piece at a time.

A warm, gentle breeze blew across the front porch at 2515 Holman causing the screenprint of the Turbanned Mistress to sway forward and back the way your grandmother might rock her chair to and fro after worship service on Sunday afternoon.
