Empathy is a complex social skill involving verbal and non-verbal cues. For a person with Autism, this skill does not come naturally. These skills start to develop with typically developing children in their toddler years. Children with autism may need extra training and reinforcement to show empathetic behavior.

We are so thankful to our clients and their families for taking an extended holiday weekend recently to allow us to schedule a staff training day. Our staff focused on either certifying or recertifying their Safety Care Certification. Safety Care is our behavioral safety program. We use Safety Care so we may effectively prevent, minimize, and manage behavioral challenges with dignity and safety.

Two of our amazing employees were featured this morning on KPRC Channel 2 in a piece about Autism Awareness Day! Larkin Banister, our Billing Coordinator, shared her experience as a mother. Also, one of our wonderful BCBA's, Lissette Billingsley, shared her experience as a professional working with autism. We want to thank Channel 2 for spotlighting all these women's experiences and helping to raise awareness about autism. Follow the link to see the clip!
KPRC 2 meteorologist Britta Merwin talked with others about living with autism and raising children with autism.
Does This Behavioral Scenario Sound Familiar?
After working all day, cleaning up after your kids, you’ve spent the past hour cooking an amazing meal for your family, and you put it in front of your toddler and tell him to take a bite. He immediately starts to cry and demand chicken nuggets. Thinking quickly, you say “Hey, I’ll make you a deal, you stop crying and I’ll go make you some chicken nuggets.” Your sigh of relief is palpable as the crying stops, and it’s quiet once more.
For many parents, this is a common occurrence, and most of us don’t pause to analyze what we may be teaching at that moment...
Positive reinforcement is often confused with bribery; is it important for parents (especially with children on the autism spectrum) to know the difference.
It's finally April! That means it's Autism Awareness Month! Our wonderful kids are super excited and have already begun some fun activities to help raise awareness. #AutismAwarenessMonth
Chris McDavid, the wonderful president of our Grand Oak Academy had a little surprise waiting for him when he got to the office this morning! 🤣 We love you, Chris! #AprilFoolsDay
Our school, Grand Oak Academy provides students a chance to learn in a traditional classroom environment. Our school uses Applied Behavior Analysis principles to ensure that children with autism, speech delays or other types of developmental disabilities can receive a quality education at a comfortable pace.
At Grand Oak Academy, we understand that finding the right environment for your young student can be challenging. We work with the State of Texas and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board as well as major insurance providers to ensure we are the right choice for any child with autism and related disorders. Our therapists love having fun moments with clients. One of their favorite activities is to make a train of chairs and roll around the clinic! Today one of our therapists was playing "train" with clients (while he was on his break!)
For those clients whose needs do not fit into our other models, we do offer a consultation service. This service can be used on an hourly basis with one of our BCBA’s or BCaBA’s as a provider. Often, the consultation service is a parent training program. The therapist meets with the parent to discuss issues. The parent is then guided to employ a behavior plan in the home.
This service can also be used for one of our therapists to attend ARD meetings. Also, they may provide training to other caregivers or family members. Extending ABA therapy services into the home is a great way to enhance development.
Happy World Behavior Analysis Day!

We know this isn't always the easiest topic - but it is important to ensure that you start to plan for your child’s future. This will ensure that things like guardianship for children with autism are done in a timely manner as well as allow for more financial stability and protection of your child’s access to government assistance in the future.

Providing Quality ABA Therapy to Families Seeking Support
If your child has been diagnosed with autism, it’s never too late or too early to begin making progress with behavior therapy. The earlier the intervention, the better the results. Your child learns differently than others, but with the right treatment and encouragement they will be able to make academic and social achievements in their own unique way.
We work with students with a range of special needs, including Asperger’s, autism, speech delays and other developmental and intellectual disabilities. A diagnosis is not required to apply for admission (although it will be required for your insurance company for reimbursing expenses.)
We have helped a wide range of children with different developmental disabilities, so if you feel your child could benefit from our treatment give us a call today, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan that will help your child to succeed to their full potential.
