After an incredibly unprecedented and dangerous term in office, the prior administration has left many Americans feeling that there is no longer a place for them in our politics. Seeing President Biden and Vice President Harris sworn in today gives me tremendous hope for our future, as we begin the task of mending the fabric of our nation. I hope that the new chapter begun today will reinvigorate the most important participants in our democracy: the citizens. While the United States remains deeply divided, I am confident that the better spirits of our country will prevail, as they always have.
From the Lincoln Memorial to the Empire State building, landmarks across the United States were illuminated on Tuesday evening as part of a ceremony led by President-elect Joe Biden to honor the 40…

Tune in now as we discuss the necessary abolition of Confederate Heroes Day! Our values as a people are reflected in the holidays we choose to commemorate, and Texas should not continue to romanticize the Civil War by lifting up its insurgents as heroes.

Today, we honor and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who gave the civil rights movement its most prominent and lasting voice. Dr. King's leadership is a timely reminder of our collective ability to create change, confront indifference, and challenge the status quo, and it gives me great hope to know that a new generation of leaders is now taking on his mantle in the present day.
Students delivered impassioned speeches Friday at the 25th-annual event, which ended with Crespo Elementary School fourth-grader Vivianna Serna taking top prize.

Today, I'm proud to participate in #WearBlueDay to bring attention to the issue of human trafficking in Texas! In 2020, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported more than 1.6 million online sex advertisements, and over 25% of these involved suspected minors. As thousands of people are exploited for sex and labor every day in Texas, we must commit to bold action. I am looking forward to working alongside my colleagues in the upcoming legislative session to combat this issue!

As we approach the end of 2020, millions of dollars in CARES Act funding is in jeopardy of expiring without being allocated to support our communities. My colleagues and I urge Governor Abbott to make $10 million immediately available to the Meals on Wheels Association of Texas to support a sharp increase in demand due to the pandemic. This funding would enable Meals on Wheels to continue to fulfill a vital role of our communities: caring for our elderly population. With regular meal deliveries and safety checks, Meals on Wheels helps elderly Texans stay safe from the coronavirus at home.

My colleagues and I urge the Texas Education Agency to waive the administration of the STAAR test for the 2020-21 academic year. After an unprecedented school year, we feel that the administration of standardized tests is an unnecessary burden on districts, teachers, and students. Additionally, the implications of grading districts' performance through the A – F accountability system could result in a gross misrepresentation of the good faith effort every educator has made to serve their students during the pandemic. Christina Morales, a proud East End small business owner, is a product of Houston's East End Texas public school system. Growing up, she never imagined she would have an opportunity to run political office; to make a difference in the area of Houston she has forever called home.
Raising two children in the same East End where she grew up, Christina remembered the challenges she and other students faced. Many didn’t have pencils, binders, paper, or any of the supplies required to complete their work. Christina rolled up her sleeves and made it her passion to become more involved in her community. She wanted not only her children, but every child, to have not only a better future, but a better way to obtain their future, and help make dreams come true.
In 1997, Christina founded the Annual Morales Back to School Supplies Giveaway. 20 years later, the program continues to help over 20,000 students from Houston’s most underprivileged communities with supply packs to foster their education.
But she didn't want to stop there, she knew education was also about building strong minds, self esteem, and confidence. Christina recently partnered with University of Texas to educate Houston’s Latino youth about the importance of good nutrition and physical fitness.
The city recognized the outstanding work she has and is doing for the community and honored her with the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Award for Education. in additional to that, In 2016 Solo Mujeres Magazine named her Woman of the Year.
After seeing the difference and positive impact she was able to make in and to her community, especially with children's education, she knew she had found her passion and wanted to dedicate herself to helping children now and for future generations have a better education, and continue to provide the resources enabling them to believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Christina Morales is proud to say she is a candidate for State Representative District 145, representing the neighborhood she grew up in.

Rep. Morales:
Multiple migrant detention centers are located in Houston and Harris County. If the stated regard for the virtues of diversity and openness often asserted by our elected officials hold actual meaning, then the people detained in these places are part of our community and merit our concern.
A well-known detention center in our community is the Southwest Key facility at 419 Emancipation Ave. It is in your constituency. It attracted attention as the “baby jail” when first announced. Many politicians objected to it when it seemed toddlers and very young children would be housed there. When it turned out to be adolescents who were sent to 419, most elected officials appeared to lose interest.
419 Emancipation has, however, remained a focus of local activism and of concern for local residents motivated by more than the political pressures of the moment. Many in our area have wondered about conditions at 419 and by extension the conditions faced by all migrants in our community.
The Covid-19 pandemic has only elevated these concerns. The public has a right to know if people in our care have been fully protected from this serious illness. It is not sufficient to say these places are subject first to state or federal regulation. Our elected officials tell us they champion the worth of all people when running for office, but then pass the buck when actually in office.
I have organized a peaceful vigil at 419 Emancipation on Christmas Eve Day, Thursday, 12/24, from noon to 1 PM. I will hold a sign requesting elected officials ask about and publicly discuss Covid conditions and all conditions at 419 Emancipation, and at all such facilities in Houston and Harris County.
This vigil will be led by local residents. We are not asking you to attend. We are asking you, who hold some measure of institutional power, to live up to the best values of our great and diverse community and show necessary and immediate care for everyone.
Thank you.

Good afternoon. I am the majority owner of a blue collar/industrial general labor employment/staffing agency in the Spring Branch District of Houston, Tx (West Houston). We have applied for government loans to help us get through this virus. We haven't heard anything positive back yet. The faster we can get the county back open the better for all. If the county, city and state don't open soon we will lose everything. WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP EXPEDITE OPENING HARRIS COUNTY? Desperate times call for desperate measures. We have dozens of people calling every day looking for work. We employ mostly minorities and people that generally have difficulties finding gainful employment. They count on us!
