As we honor caregivers this month, we would like to introduce you to Joy Melton. She is the wife to Richard Melton and mother to Jake and Alexus Melton as well as her fur girls Baby and Aubie.
We, at ASCF, love Joy because she consistently has a smile on her face and exhibits unconditional love. While some days can be challenging, Joy says that the best unexpected gift she has received from being a caregiver is a greater appreciation for all the beautiful relationships God has blessed her with through the years. (Pictured with Joy is another ASCF resident family, Dinah Golding. These two have become extremely close as their husbands are bravely fighting cancer.). This is a journey we have shared with our Family, friends, co workers, neighbors, etc.. We are strong as a family because of God and his people who surround us with love and support.

As we honor caregivers this month, we would like to introduce you to Kimberly Broadway. She is mom to Kensington Martin. We, at ASCF, love and admire them because they consistently exhibit unconditional love even on the hardest days. While some days can be challenging, Kimberly says that the best unexpected gift she has received from being a caregiver is having Kensington thank her for not giving up during this journey even when Kensington wanted to give up on herself. At A Shelter for Cancer Families, we love that there is one holiday a year devoted just to being grateful for the abundance of blessings we have. It is not about presents, or candy, decorations or mythical figures leaving treats in unsuspecting places. Instead, it's all about family, food, and celebrating together all that we have.
To help embrace this upcoming holiday, thankful pumpkins were delivered on the doorsteps to each of our residents for them to transcribe their blessings. Even in the midst of a storm, there is still gratitude.

Trevor is husband to Jasmine and proud daddy to cutie pies Tommy and Alex. He is tireless and exhibits endless amounts of unconditional love. Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story
Today we caught up Ciara's Beads of Courage. Ciara is a part of the "Beads in the mail" program and has been since 2018. Usually there is a waiting list however, she had 2 people willing to sponsor her (Juanette Giles & Gena Laurence Traylor) so she was started in the program right away in September 2018. ♥️
The beads of courage program allows our kiddos to keep track of their journey with #ChildhoodCancer in away that they understand. Ciara understands what the different beads signify on her strand. Yesterday when we received her beads a very special one was included, a purple heart. 🥺 This bead stands for bereavement. When she opened the package to lay out her beads and she read the small card attached to the heart it read, "I'm sorry for the loss of your friend." This bead Ciara requested so that she would always remember Jacob and how he never ever gave up as he battled #neuroblastoma.
Andrea Nicole Ponce always know that your baby boy will never ever be forgotten!! When Ciara placed the bead on her string she broke down crying. She said, "Momma it's just not fair that kids have to get cancer and that some of them have to die. Kids shouldn't get cancer and Jacob should still be here." 😢💔 My heart hurt so bad.
These beads mean so much more to Ciara than "just a string of beads." This string of 500+ beads tells Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story. This string of beads inspires her to "Be better and Try harder." #NeverGiveUp and get the world to realize that children with cancer deserve less harsh treatments. More options! To find out WHY KIDS GET CANCER. This string of beads shows her that no matter what she's faced so far along this journey, she's overcome it!

Because of his vision, A Shelter for Cancer Families (formerly Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation) was created to address the needs of families affected by cancer that were not already being met elsewhere. The need for appropriate housing for out-of-towners seeking cancer treatment in Houston has not kept pace with the need and many of the housing options available are insufficient to meet the needs of families. Even more, families affected by cancer often find it difficult to traverse the cancer landscape. Whether native or new to our area, patients and their families need guidance for the cancer journey that is easy to access. ASCF believes patients & their families should be afforded options & dignity especially during times of health crisis. Through the navigation services we offer to all cancer families as well as the temporary housing we provide to out-of-town families seeking care in Houston, ASCF provides a sanctuary where families affected by cancer feel supported, valued and can heal surrounded by those they love most..

Many of our friends without cancer have shared with us that you don’t want to wear a mask because you want to save them for someone who is in more need. While in theory, that sounds great, the issue is your mask protects those in need. Likewise, my mask protects you. It is true we want to save hospital grade N95 masks for our healthcare providers but IF you MUST get out of your home for something essential, please cover your nose and mouth in an effort to help protect others. This simple “mask” takes less than a minute to “make” and while not 100% effective can significantly cut down on the spread of your droplets getting into the air where they may possibly be inhaled by someone else. This ONLY works if we ALL continue to social distance, stay home unless we MUST leave home and cover our mouths and noses. Again, the majority of the spread of this virus right now is being spread by others in our community who have mild to no symptoms of the virus.

A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF) offers more than housing. we provide much needed tangible support (not offered elsewhere) to all families with cancer and to those who travel to Houston for treatment, we offer a “home away from home” where families can gather, create new memories & heal together.
Our housing program is unique in that it offers individual fully furnished residences (complete with private kitchens and washers/dryers). These private sanctuaries offer peace of mind, dignity, options, support and when necessary privacy to families who are making the cancer journey away from home. The design of ASCF’s campus allows each family to access their individual residence without the need to traverse a shared hallway or community area.
ASCF’s cancer navigators help families in the Texas Medical Center as well as those elsewhere (via the use of technology) to make sure that their questions get asked and answered in ways they can process. ASCF navigators serve at the request of families, taking notes during appointments, keeping track of questions asked and answered and ensuring families have the information they need to make the best possible choices for themselves. Whether navigating a new diagnosis, a change in treatment or a shift from active treatment to survivorship or even hospice, ASCF navigators help to make sure that the families we serve have the resources they need for the duration of the cancer journey.
While cancer may not take a holiday, ASCF makes it possible for the families we serve to celebrate every special milestone along the cancer journey. Even more, our team thoughtfully photographs these important moments shared by our families to ensure that each is captured and preserved for years to come. Whether a birthday, baptism, holiday or special anniversary, A Shelter for Cancer Families makes sure that what is important to our families does not get lost in the chaos of cancer.
