The loss of his mother, Kathryn, to sarcoma, in addition to his own eighteen-month battle with the disease, led Tom Amschwand to establish the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation. In 2017, recognizing the changing cancer landscape, the organization unanimously adopted the name A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF) in order to better reflect its mission. Today, ASCF provides much needed tangible support to families affected by cancer including but not limited to navigation services for those residing in the Houston area as well as temporary housing for out-of-town cancer families visiting Houston for cancer treatment.

Over the years, A Shelter for Cancer Families’ (ASCF) work has only been possible thanks to the generous support of our donors, partners and friends. Our friends at Tenenbaum Jewelers have helped many in our community including so many families served by ASCF.

In celebration of the holiday season and to make holiday shopping (in a global pandemic) easier, Tenenbaum Jewelers has joined with our friends at Tootsies launching their first-ever digital catalog. Even better, they are offering YOU, our ASCF patrons, $250 off your first online purchase of $1000 or more. To redeem your offer, simply use the code HOLIDAY250 at checkout and your code is valid at both stores.

As we honor caregivers this month, we would like to introduce you to Joy Melton. She is the wife to Richard Melton and mother to Jake and Alexus Melton as well as her fur girls Baby and Aubie.

We, at ASCF, love Joy because she consistently has a smile on her face and exhibits unconditional love. While some days can be challenging, Joy says that the best unexpected gift she has received from being a caregiver is a greater appreciation for all the beautiful relationships God has blessed her with through the years. (Pictured with Joy is another ASCF resident family, Dinah Golding. These two have become extremely close as their husbands are bravely fighting cancer.). This is a journey we have shared with our Family, friends, co workers, neighbors, etc.. We are strong as a family because of God and his people who surround us with love and support.

To recharge her battery Joy enjoys long walks, spending time with loved ones, playing with her fur girls, working in the yard and hiking with Alexus Thank you, Joy for the fabulous example of love that you show every day!

As we honor caregivers this month, we would like to introduce you to Kimberly Broadway. She is mom to Kensington Martin. We, at ASCF, love and admire them because they consistently exhibit unconditional love even on the hardest days. While some days can be challenging, Kimberly says that the best unexpected gift she has received from being a caregiver is having Kensington thank her for not giving up during this journey even when Kensington wanted to give up on herself. To recharge her battery, she enjoys traveling with her family and taking in God's word to recharge her spirit. Thank you, Kimberly for the fabulous example of love that you demonstrate daily! At A Shelter for Cancer Families, we love that there is one holiday a year devoted just to being grateful for the abundance of blessings we have. It is not about presents, or candy, decorations or mythical figures leaving treats in unsuspecting places. Instead, it's all about family, food, and celebrating together all that we have.

To help embrace this upcoming holiday, thankful pumpkins were delivered on the doorsteps to each of our residents for them to transcribe their blessings. Even in the midst of a storm, there is still gratitude.

We are honored to highlight this fabulous caregiver during National Caregiver Month... Trevor Wilson!

Trevor is husband to Jasmine and proud daddy to cutie pies Tommy and Alex. He is tireless and exhibits endless amounts of unconditional love. Trevor says that the best unexpected gift of being here for Jasmine has been seeing all of the "baby's firsts" that he missed with Tommy. We love that! And to recharge? Well, Trevor has a need for speed! He enjoys drag racing... and home improvement projects!

We love your heart and your beautiful family Trevor!

We witness some of the biggest hearts we have ever known when we see caregivers in action. It is something that is visible at ASCF on a regular basis. Whether it is a parent taking care of their child, a child taking care of their parent, or spouses who find themselves in the role of caregiver to their life partner... there is another level of love that gets tapped into that is absolutely beautiful.

Today at ASCF, we salute and thank our veterans that uphold our freedoms in this great country. This past year we have had the honor of serving past and present members of the military, who are now fighting a new battle.

The Best on Earth: A Veteran's Day Tribute

If someone has done military service,
They earn the title "veteran," and more;
They earn our deep respect and admiration;
That they are special no one can ignore.

They sacrificed the comforts we enjoy;
The list is long of all the things they gave.
Our veterans are extraordinary people;
They’re loyal, dedicated, true and brave.

When terror and invasion were real threats,
They showed us they could handle any storm.
We owe our freedoms and our very lives
To our veterans, who served in uniform.

Our veterans should be celebrities;
They’re exceptional; no other group compares.
We’re grateful for the many things they’ve done;
They’re always in our hearts and in our prayers.

We owe our veterans support and friendship;
Let no one ever question what they’re worth.
These men and women served us and our country, our veterans--the very best on earth.

By Joanna Fuchs

We believe these same attributes apply to our caregivers! Thank you Daniel Frawley and Kayla VanBuskirk for sharing your amazing families with us, and thank you for serving others and answering the call of duty.

As we honor caregivers this month, we would like to introduce you to Tiffany Criswell our Housing Manager here at ASCF. Tiffany personifies the selflessness of a caregiver as she is always there for every family we serve. Whether they need a shoulder to cry on or just a friend to chat with about life, Tiffany always is there with open arms and heart. While some days can be challenging, she says the best unexpected gift she has received as a caregiver is the connections built and the memories made with these wonderful families that stay with us during their cancer journey.

Thank you, Tiffany for the fabulous example of love that you demonstrate daily. And to all of you in Social Media world, if you see this amazing lady today, please wish her a very Happy Birthday!

Caregivers are selfless, generous, and seemingly tireless individuals. It's not often we see them take a break and take care of themselves, but when we do, it's the ultimate recharge! If you are a caregiver, remember to take time for self-care. You and your loved one will be all the better for it!

Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story
10/26/2020

Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story

Today we caught up Ciara's Beads of Courage. Ciara is a part of the "Beads in the mail" program and has been since 2018. Usually there is a waiting list however, she had 2 people willing to sponsor her (Juanette Giles & Gena Laurence Traylor) so she was started in the program right away in September 2018. ♥️

The beads of courage program allows our kiddos to keep track of their journey with #ChildhoodCancer in away that they understand. Ciara understands what the different beads signify on her strand. Yesterday when we received her beads a very special one was included, a purple heart. 🥺 This bead stands for bereavement. When she opened the package to lay out her beads and she read the small card attached to the heart it read, "I'm sorry for the loss of your friend." This bead Ciara requested so that she would always remember Jacob and how he never ever gave up as he battled #neuroblastoma.

Andrea Nicole Ponce always know that your baby boy will never ever be forgotten!! When Ciara placed the bead on her string she broke down crying. She said, "Momma it's just not fair that kids have to get cancer and that some of them have to die. Kids shouldn't get cancer and Jacob should still be here." 😢💔 My heart hurt so bad.

These beads mean so much more to Ciara than "just a string of beads." This string of 500+ beads tells Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story. This string of beads inspires her to "Be better and Try harder." #NeverGiveUp and get the world to realize that children with cancer deserve less harsh treatments. More options! To find out WHY KIDS GET CANCER. This string of beads shows her that no matter what she's faced so far along this journey, she's overcome it!

If you have a child with cancer or know a child with cancer I encourage you to participate in this program. If your child's hospital doesn't participate you can enroll in the mail in program.

Beautiful article written about one of our dear friends. Dr Marco is an extraordinary human being. His technical expertise in the operating room has only been matched by his heart for serving others. He continues to serve as an inspiration for all of us at ASCF and to his beloved patients and their families. We love you Dr Rex Marco.

General information

Because of his vision, A Shelter for Cancer Families (formerly Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation) was created to address the needs of families affected by cancer that were not already being met elsewhere. The need for appropriate housing for out-of-towners seeking cancer treatment in Houston has not kept pace with the need and many of the housing options available are insufficient to meet the needs of families. Even more, families affected by cancer often find it difficult to traverse the cancer landscape. Whether native or new to our area, patients and their families need guidance for the cancer journey that is easy to access. ASCF believes patients & their families should be afforded options & dignity especially during times of health crisis. Through the navigation services we offer to all cancer families as well as the temporary housing we provide to out-of-town families seeking care in Houston, ASCF provides a sanctuary where families affected by cancer feel supported, valued and can heal surrounded by those they love most..

Our Story

A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF) offers more than housing. we provide much needed tangible support (not offered elsewhere) to all families with cancer and to those who travel to Houston for treatment, we offer a “home away from home” where families can gather, create new memories & heal together.

Our housing program is unique in that it offers individual fully furnished residences (complete with private kitchens and washers/dryers). These private sanctuaries offer peace of mind, dignity, options, support and when necessary privacy to families who are making the cancer journey away from home. The design of ASCF’s campus allows each family to access their individual residence without the need to traverse a shared hallway or community area.

ASCF’s cancer navigators help families in the Texas Medical Center as well as those elsewhere (via the use of technology) to make sure that their questions get asked and answered in ways they can process. ASCF navigators serve at the request of families, taking notes during appointments, keeping track of questions asked and answered and ensuring families have the information they need to make the best possible choices for themselves. Whether navigating a new diagnosis, a change in treatment or a shift from active treatment to survivorship or even hospice, ASCF navigators help to make sure that the families we serve have the resources they need for the duration of the cancer journey.

While cancer may not take a holiday, ASCF makes it possible for the families we serve to celebrate every special milestone along the cancer journey. Even more, our team thoughtfully photographs these important moments shared by our families to ensure that each is captured and preserved for years to come. Whether a birthday, baptism, holiday or special anniversary, A Shelter for Cancer Families makes sure that what is important to our families does not get lost in the chaos of cancer.

I AM SOOOOO lucky and grateful to work for such an amazing organization 💛❤️💜💚 Watch the video, it’s wonderful 😊😊
THEY TAKE CARE OF US WHEN WE CANT We have been very fortune in being able to stay at ASCF on two separate occasions and, on both stays, have been amazed at their thoughtfulness, warmth, dedication and remarkable energy. As a parent and caregiver of an adult daughter fighting cancer for seven years, there are moments where I feel beaten. Since our stay at ASCF, I don’t feel alone in this personal battle. ASCF has managed to create a caring environment while insuring privacy and safety. We feel enveloped in understanding and compassion. It is not one large single gesture. It is the ongoing subtle things they do. Seasonal handmade wreaths on our doors, thirty plus valentine cards handmade by elementary students, delicious soul-comforting holiday sweets provided by local vendors, essential handmade face masks and shields subtly hung on our doors, hearts with supportive messages taped discreetly on our windows, etc. ASCF strives and succeeds wonderfully in providing both a physical and emotional shelter for patients and their families. They understand that caring for and healing a stricken loved one often is a collective family effort, not just a sole caregiver. Thank YOU for accepting us into the ASCF family! With gratitude, the Zabarah clan :-)
The word "Shelter" does not truly capture the essence of this "Melrose Place" architectural-era home-away-from-home. Our apartment unit is refurbished to the delight of any HGTV enthusiast, with every amenity necessary, and with very comfortable furnishings. The property is well-maintained with manicured courtyards that provide a cute ecosystem for a few friendly whiptail lizards that greet you as you come and go. As a caregiver in this crazy Coronavirus time, I need to de-stress while distancing. I know that many might not consider the pool area for distancing, but I have taken full advantage of the opportunity to do my water yoga and aerobics (weather permitting). My daughter is the cancer patient and, in the past, she thoroughly enjoyed going to a sports team event during our many visits to Houston to lift her spirits. She would rather be in the third-base-line seats watching her hero, Altuve` hit one out of the park, but with everything being postponed, and us basically being quarantined, she has settled for puzzling, binge watching some shows, and taking an occasional car ride to see the beach. Staying at the ASFCP Drake Street apartment is so comfortable and a true haven of comfort in our trying time. Thank you to all of the sponsors and staff that make ‘A Shelter for Cancer Families’ available for people like us who travel far from home to take advantage of the world-class medical care that Houston has to offer.

I was given the opportunity to connect a friend’s family to ASFCF when they were headed into MD Anderson for what they thought would be treatment for a tumor in their 2yr old that had not responded to treatment out of town where they live. I called Jen and she stepped into action. This is the last text I received from the friend. Thank you all!!
