2020 has brought unexpected challenges for many individuals, companies, and organizations. Despite the challenges, the YMCA has adapted by providing support for our community with regular food distributions to families in need, childcare for essential workers, creating initiatives to end social inequality and more. The Y’s continued commitment to providing these services has been financially devastating to our organization. Help us continue to provide for our community by making a year-end contribution to the YMCA of Greater Houston, a 501c3 charity, and help us impact those in need: https://www.ymcahouston.org/give

Meet Rafiullah, a refugee from Afghanistan who moved to the U.S. in 2018. Rafiullah was a professional drafter in Afghanistan. When he moved to the U.S., he was unable to secure a drafting job without a U.S. AutoCAD certification. He approached the YMCA for career assistance through YMCA’s Professional Recertification program where he was then able to earn his U.S. AutoCAD certification. Now, Rafiullah is an Engineer Assistant at Harvey-Cleary Builders, one of the largest construction contractors in Houston and a proud supporter of the YMCA. Learn more about YMCA’s International Services programs and how we continue to help people like Rafiullah every day. https://www.ymcahouston.org/locations/ymca-international-services/programs

The pandemic has had a financially devastating impact on the YMCA. Despite our current challenges, we are committed to addressing critical needs in our community, but we can’t do it without your help. During this season of giving, you can help us advocate for the most vulnerable in our community. Your tax-deductible gift can provide essential services, including child care, food distribution, programs to combat social isolation in teens and seniors, and more.

Visit https://www.ymcahouston.org/give to learn more. Together we can do extraordinary things. #GivingTuesday

This Thanksgiving, we provided 500 Houston-area families with a Thanksgiving meal thanks to a generous donation from Luby’s Cafeteria, 11595 Fuqua St., manager, Michael Arcos. Michael heard about how the YMCA helped provide local families in need with a Thanksgiving meal and wanted to offer his support by donating to help hundreds of Houston-area families.
Thank you to Michael Arcos and Luby’s for brightening Thanksgiving for so many!

Meet Cho Cho Me, a Burmese refugee turned American Citizen thanks in part to YMCA International Services. Once Cho Cho became a U.S. citizen, she knew that she could make a difference by voting. On October 20, 2020, at 5 P.M., she went to vote for the first time in her life as an American citizen. Cho Cho took her 15-year-old son, who isn’t a U.S. citizen yet, but who she hopes will follow in her footsteps to exercise his right to vote when he is able. Cho Cho felt excited and impatient to vote in her first American presidential election, and now that her first voting experience is out of the way, she looks forward to voting in all future elections. We’re so proud of Cho Cho and grateful to have played a small part in her journey to becoming an American.

Halloween throwback 🖤🖤🖤
Are there any plans to bring back some of the strength training classes? Example HIIT??
Will the Y open today since we did not get the hurricane nor the rains. We miss the zumba this evening 7.30 to 8.00 pm. It keeps us happy in this pandemic.
Good afternoon! When will the Y open for indoor classes and use of the Welness center?
Hi! Has the YMCA determined when the will re-open?
Improving your community starts with responding to the #2020Census and a few minutes can #ShapeYourFuture. Your response will inform how billions of dollars in federal funding can aid in community services, Head Start, SNAP, CHIP, and programs that support minority businesses. Your personal information is kept confidential by law and data collected is solely used for statistical purposes, never shared with any other government agencies. Respond today at 2020census.gov. You can also respond by phone in various languages, as well as by mail. We should have a zumba teacher do zumba and we can do it at home.
Thank you Priscilla for the Carnival celebration at Zumba!
The Wings for Life World Run is a global charity event where everybody starts at exactly the same moment, then the “Catcher Car,” chases runners along the course until each one is caught. 100% of all entries go to life-changing spinal cord research projects. It happens May 3rd at Eleanor Tinsley Park! https://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/en/locations/houston
It would be awesome if the YMCA could implement a morning class or two during the week that start at 4:30. This will allow those that have earlier start times at work to enjoy the awesome classes. Starting with just one class and see what the response is would be awesome!
Thank you to all my teachers in the YMCA for giving us their best and helping us to achieve our health goals. Love you all.
Great weather for football on Saturday.
