Happy Halloween
We hope you have a safe and fun Halloween. We can all help keep our kids safe on Halloween by paying even more attention while driving. Here are some tips from safekids.org:
Tips for drivers:
- Be especially alert and take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
- Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
- Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Thank you Karl J. Amelang
Today we recognize the life of longtime YMCA supporter Karl John Amelang. Karl was involved in many civic and charitable endeavors in Houston, including helping to organize and co-found the Trotter Family YMCA (originally known as the West Family YMCA and later known as the Post Oak Family YMCA). Karl became a charter member of the Y in 1966, started as a board member in 1967, was a board member of the YMCA of Greater Houston in 1972, held several board leadership positions, and served on National YMCA committees. In 1993, Karl received the coveted honor of becoming a life member of the YMCA of Greater Houston board. Karl's family has strong connections to the Y. His parents, Karl and Olga Amelang were founding members and leaders of the Post Oak YMCA Active Older Adult Program, organized in 1978. Karl has set a legacy at the YMCA of Greater Houston by actively recruiting his nephew, Wellington "Rocky" Stevens III, who has been a board member, donor, fundraiser and advocate for the Y for nearly 40 years.
