"My class motivates me to develop my English and also in this pandemic situation, it makes me feel socialize with people." Oh, isn't that what we all need right now? Students and teachers, though we don't see each other as much as we'd like, we're all in this semester together!

When Claudia came to the US years ago, English was her second language but her work to learn grew into a desire to teach others. Claudia started to volunteer at MAM in summer 2019, then taught back-to-back semesters while also working and pursuing a degree. When asked what keeps her motivated, Claudia says: "Getting to know students and seeing how much of an effort they're making to learn. Some of them work all day before going to classes in the evening. They've inspired me to keep going. I think of them and I have to go!"

Claudia, thank you for all of the time, patience, and energy you put into every single class to help students move closer to their goals. We think you are amazing, and students do, too!

When the office closed in March, 45 students moved to online classes, helped and supported by a small pool of dedicated volunteer teachers. Classes worked hard to overcome many, many challenges (technology! children home from school! illness! and so much more) but still learned and a laughed - a lot!

In August, we saw more than THREE HUNDRED students in online classes, working closely with dozens of volunteer teachers. Groups continue to work through challenges, but are still learning and laughing - a lot! We know the need for English classes in Houston remains high and there is more work to do, but are so beyond proud of the year students and teachers have had ❤️

The MAM Literacy Advance Story

Transforming lives and communities through the doorway of literacy.

Since 1964, MAM Literacy Advance has assisted and empowered adults to achieve personal goals and self-sufficiency through improved literacy. Trained volunteer tutors help deliver a variety of free literacy programs for adult students from all around Houston.

In late 2018, Literacy Advance joined Memorial Assistance Ministries’ network of programs and services, expanding geographic reach and enhancing programmatic offerings to adult learners. Find out more about MAM and their impressive service menu.

A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a United Way agency for more than 30 years, MAM Literacy Advance is grateful for the widespread support of the Houston community, from our generous donors and supporters, to the volunteers who are at the heart of who we are and what we do.

I am the sculptor of the Alice in Wonderland Sculpture that was installed this week in Evelyn's Park. The sculpture goes a long way to promote literacy. I have hidden 150 things in the sculpture in honor of the 150th anniversary of the book. There are free detective books on www.alicesculpture.com so that parents and families can find the items. Though many want the list of 150, I won't give it out, but will be doing some reveal videos in riddle and rhyme to encourage individuals to go back to the book and look and read. I also hope to read the book from Alice's chair and video tape it so others can read along. I have some curriculmn in STEAM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) that I ahve created with the project. I'm also an author of the book "3D Technology In Fine Art and Craft: Exploring 3D Printing, Scanning, Sculpting and Milling"which I use to encourage the STEAM component in the art and with groups. Lastly, I would love to begin to travel to the inner city schools. I would like to find a way to get the two stories in the hands of children. I don't know how I could afford to do this, but with the things mentioned above I think combined they are good incentives and learning experiences, followed up with a visit to the sculpture. If you have any suggestions on how to do the above, please do not hesitate in putting your suggestions here. If you want to help in any way.
ESL teachers should watch the movie: English Vinglish. This is how lives are changed by our work.
Congratulations to all - what an accomplishment!!!
