Box 79842, Houston, TX 77279 As the District 6 State Board of Education (SBOE) member, Donna Bahorich brings experience in business, education and legislation to the position.

Donna took office on January, 2013. She serves as chair of the Committee on School Initiatives, which oversees agenda items related to charter schools, State Board for Educator Certification rules, long range plans for K12 education and education technology, and the appointment of school board members for those districts located on military bases. Donna was appointed by the chair of the SBOE to be the board liaison coordinating with the education commissioner on all charter approvals. Background and Experience: After graduating from Virginia Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in financial management, Donna went to work in the telecommunications industry. She was first employed by the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company, under the AT&T umbrella, and later transferred to Mountain Bell. During her time at Bell, she handled multi-million dollar contracts and earned recognition as one of the top five district manager candidates. Donna left Mountain Bell to raise a family with her husband Mike in 1985. In 1990, Donna earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Liberty University. In 2005, Donna became the campaign manager for Dan Patrick during his first run for a state senate seat. She subsequently worked as the campaign treasurer and communications director for Sen. Patrick. In her work as the legislative district director for the senator, she gained valuable experience and knowledge in meeting the needs of constituents. Donna was named the Senate District 7 Volunteer of the Year in 2007. She also served as the 2010 Harris County Republican Primary Director, assigning polling locations and assembling election personnel for 885 precincts for primary and runoff elections. An active community volunteer, Donna served as a member of the West Houston P-16 Council; graduated from the Leadership Houston program, served as president of the Daughters of Liberty Republican Women; and is a member of the pastor’s council at the Vineyard Church of Houston. Donna and Mike Bahorich have been married for 32 years and have three sons and three granddaughters. Donna’s Priorities on the SBOE: Donna is committed to developing advanced, real-world core and career and technical education courses that will lead to career exposure and strong opportunities for students after high school. As the chair of the Committee on School Initiatives and the board liaison, Donna is passionate about approving quality, effective public charter schools that will successfully prepare the most disadvantaged children. As the District 6 representative, Donna Bahorich represents most of the western half of Harris County.

Texas will extend time that schools will be allowed to stay online-only, Gov. Greg Abbott says

This is a prudent move in the right direction given the escalation of the virus. Safety for students, teachers and staff is key to when and how we open schools. https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/14/texas-schools-online-pandemic/

Schools had previously been told that they would need to limit online-only instruction to the first three weeks of the school year, or they'd lose state funding.

New TEA guidelines mandate face masks for all students over 10 years-old next year

Creating the safest environment possible for any back-to-school option is critical. I know that Commissioner Michael Morath is continuing to work on this as well as the Governor, Lt Gov, and our lege leaders.

https://www.chron.com/neighborhood/sugarland/news/article/Texas-Education-Agency-mandates-face-masks-for-15401559.php

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) July 7 released new health and safety guidelines for re-opening schools in August which require all students over ten years-old to wear a face mask. However, many of the TEA guidelines serve as merely recommendations for districts as opposed to standardized infection...

Hamilton is a perfect way to end July 4th weekend. Amazing that it follows the Ron Chernow book so well. You might want to use the subtitles to keep up. It goes fast and can be hard to follow if you don’t know the story or words. Amazing songs that tell a compelling American story. A must enjoy.

Harris County GOP chair-elect under fire for post of MLK quote next to banana

This is a totally unacceptable post at any time, particularly at this time when the nation is raw and heavy-hearted over the treatment of our black brothers and sisters. The incoming Harris County Republican Party chair Keith Nielsen must step aside. We are the party of Lincoln. We can only move forward if our leadership understands this and is attuned to welcoming and including Americans of every color. #BetterTogether #HonorOneAnotherAboveYourselves

Keith Nielsen, the incoming chairman of the Harris County Republican Party, posted a photo on social media of a Martin Luther King, Jr. quote next to a banana, reflecting a racist trope.

Statement by President George W. Bush | Bush Center

Beautifully expressed, George W. Bush. It is a time for folks that look like me to listen and really hear our black brothers and sisters. We can do better and be better together only if our hearts are open and pledged to move toward each other. Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Laura and I are anguished by the brutal suffocation of George Floyd and disturbed by the injustice and fear that suffocate our country. Yet we have resisted

Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words

I didn’t know much about Justice Clarence Thomas. The PBS documentary on Justice Thomas is a must-see. What an incredible, inspirational life story. I had no idea he’s written over 600 opinions, 30% more than any other sitting judge on the Supreme Court. My favorite shot is the bust of his grandad looking over him in his office. Stream “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” on the PBS app or view https://www.pbs.org/video/created-equal-clarence-thomas-in-his-own-words-rymp6z/

Follow a complex, often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power and jurisprudence.

Costco Customer Kicked Out for Not Wearing Face Mask | NowThis

Can I just say that I don’t understand the mask controversy!? If a store has a policy that requires you to wear a mask, wear the mask or don’t shop there. Why confront the store personnel because you don’t want to wear a mask? I’m not understanding this. People are trying to make the best decisions they can right now. We all know the information keeps changing. But everyone is trying to do their best. Can we give just A LITTLE GRACE to folks even though it’s not your personal preference? Geez, Guys!
