Donna Bahorich-former Texas SBOE Dist 6 member Welcome to the Donna Bahorich Facebook fan page. Donna is the former Texas State Board of Education Chair 2015-2019 and District 6 Texas State Board of Education Member from 2013-2020.

As the District 6 State Board of Education (SBOE) member, Donna Bahorich brings experience in business, education and legislation to the position. Donna took office on January, 2013. She serves as chair of the Committee on School Initiatives, which oversees agenda items related to charter schools, State Board for Educator Certification rules, long range plans for K12 education and education technology, and the appointment of school board members for those districts located on military bases. Donna was appointed by the chair of the SBOE to be the board liaison coordinating with the education commissioner on all charter approvals. Background and Experience:
After graduating from Virginia Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in financial management, Donna went to work in the telecommunications industry. She was first employed by the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company, under the AT&T umbrella, and later transferred to Mountain Bell. During her time at Bell, she handled multi-million dollar contracts and earned recognition as one of the top five district manager candidates. Donna left Mountain Bell to raise a family with her husband Mike in 1985. In 1990, Donna earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Liberty University. In 2005, Donna became the campaign manager for Dan Patrick during his first run for a state senate seat. She subsequently worked as the campaign treasurer and communications director for Sen. Patrick. In her work as the legislative district director for the senator, she gained valuable experience and knowledge in meeting the needs of constituents. Donna was named the Senate District 7 Volunteer of the Year in 2007. She also served as the 2010 Harris County Republican Primary Director, assigning polling locations and assembling election personnel for 885 precincts for primary and runoff elections. An active community volunteer, Donna served as a member of the West Houston P-16 Council; graduated from the Leadership Houston program, served as president of the Daughters of Liberty Republican Women; and is a member of the pastor’s council at the Vineyard Church of Houston. Donna and Mike Bahorich have been married for 32 years and have three sons and three granddaughters. Donna’s Priorities on the SBOE:
Donna is committed to developing advanced, real-world core and career and technical education courses that will lead to career exposure and strong opportunities for students after high school. As the chair of the Committee on School Initiatives and the board liaison, Donna is passionate about approving quality, effective public charter schools that will successfully prepare the most disadvantaged children. As the District 6 representative, Donna Bahorich represents most of the western half of Harris County.

MARCH ON // Freedom Expression No. 20

This collaboration of spoken word and song by Lewis Pittman and Kallie Foltz Bahorich is an incredibly compelling, inspirational encouragement to the church to lead in bringing justice to all our brothers and sisters of color. Much needed this week again after the horror in Atlanta. Let the power of the fault lines bring us together not continue to pull us apart. #MarchOn #LoveGodLovePeople #ActJustlyLoveMercyWalkHumbly

I hope all the people who stormed our nation’s Capitol yesterday are identified and prosecuted. Rioting, mayhem, intimidation and destruction are not the answers to serious political disagreements. It doesn’t matter who is doing it or for what purpose, it’s not acceptable. Americans work our issues out through political means and processes. That work is painfully slow, frustrating, and often futile. However, that is the work involved in a constitutional republic. Of all days, let’s re-commit ourselves today to working for change in hearts and minds for the things we believe in fighting for. Make your case and do the really hard work to get others to follow and support it. That is what democracy looks like.

01/06/2021

I’m praying for the safety of everyone in the Capitol right now. Protesting and debating are totally fine and part of our country’s DNA. Storming the Capitol is NOT acceptable and an affront to our constitutional republic. Call out the Guard to clear these folks out now, Mr President!!

FINAL SBOE News_2021 Blessings - Donna Bahorich

Only a few more hours and I'm officially retired from the Texas State Board of Education. It's been an amazing ride involving an amazing amount of work, incredible people and inspiring students. BUT, also, a LABOR of LOVE. God bless TX education! #txed #txlege

Closing Thoughts It is worth repeating what I wrote last year about my service. While staying true to my strong conservative principles, I used the following guideposts in my work on the Board:

Vice President Mike Pence gets Covid vaccine, Fauci says 'I'm ready to go'

Such good news about the COVID vaccines rolling out. A big thank you to President Trump, Dr Fauci and Dr Birx, VP Pence and the whole task force, Operation Warp Speed, and all whose tireless efforts made this possible when naysayers assured us it was impossible so soon! A Merry Christmas and better 2021 to us all! 🎄🎉👏

I'm one to first look internally rather than externally. I realize it's more fun and popular to self-deflect. IMHO, if Donald J. Trump loses this cloooose election, the main difference will be due to his verbal (and Twitter), not actual policy, handling of COVID.

The large group of independent thinking voters (especially women and seniors) wanted and needed to hear from a leader who was able to articulate the struggles (and strengths) in balancing a worldwide pandemic (requiring clarity, empathy) and the need to keep the economy going (requiring determination, inspiration). EVERY American has been affected by COVID, many in a deeply personal way.

We needed to hear a strong balance on COVID from the president. Trump just couldn't make the case in any consistent way. He could have...he just didn't. Trump may still somehow pull it out, but if he doesn't, I believe this is the real difference that moved many critical independent thinking voters from Trump to Biden. #election2020

I’m not on the ballot so I’m getting ready to help the voters Tuesday...HAPPY VOTING! Remember we are all Americans and can celebrate that and our process of electing our representatives. Win or lose, let’s work together toward addressing issues and the many needs of our people. I’m a proud Republican, however, no party has all the best solutions or ideas. BUT we’re #bettertogether #proudtobeanamerican #prayingforourleaders

US GDP surged a record 33% in the 3rd quarter as the economy reopened, roughly double the next-biggest jump

Such good news for the economy! I know we have a virus surge that wants to rear its ugly head, but, hopefully, we'll practice all the safety things we need to do to keep the economy going and people employed as we get through this next phase. Let's also hope we hear great things from the vaccine trials very soon!!
https://www.businessinsider.com/us-q3-gdp-record-growth-economic-reopening-recession-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-10

Economic output still sits well below pre-pandemic highs. GDP growth would've had to reach roughly 46% to balance out the record second-quarter slump.

Influential literacy expert Lucy Calkins is changing her views

This is a BIG deal folks! The third most popular reading program in the country will change to follow the research on how to teach all students to read. No more excuses (or experiments) publishers! Follow the research on the need for explicit instruction.

In a major shift, the controversial figure in the fight over how to teach reading now says that beginning readers should focus on sounding out words, according to a document obtained by APM Reports.

Bustle

The Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” is indeed scary and very informative. A MUST SEE! We truly have no idea how our thoughts and choices in behavior and activism are fed and moved by “the men, women and algorithms behind the curtain” in this relatively new day of widespread social media (“manipulation” is a more accurate term).

We need to recommit to actually getting to know, working with and loving each other, not continuing to move toward hatred and conspiracies that divide families, friends, communities and our country. Yes, we disagree on MANY things but finding common ground enough to move forward is critical. I know that’s asking a lot this close to a national election that is increasingly bitter, but we ought to at least think about it. #NotGonnaHate #GonnaMakeTheFirstMove
