Houston registers lower death rates for heart disease and cancer

Great news for Houston! Kudos to the Go Healthy Houston task force members for your work to promote healthy living.

Houston is one of several major cities that in the past decade has made great progress in reducing death rates from a number of health conditions, including heart disease and cancer, even as some mortality rates remain above the national average. Urban areas tend to have greater disparities in acces…

Glad to know the Vuong family and proud to have worked with them to open South Union’s newest grocery store, Pyburns. This week, Pyburns opens its doors; bringing fresh food and creating jobs to what was once a food desert. Many thanks to Mayor Parker, the Housing Department and Grocers Supply for their partnership.

City Council approves changes encouraging homeowners to repair sidewalks

If your sidewalk needs repair, City Council voted this week to ease the process.

Hoping to pave the way for more homeowners to repair cracked and crumbling sidewalks, the City Council unanimously approved a pair of ordinances Wednesday intended to make that task less onerous. Mayor Annise Parker said she didn't expect the changes to usher in a batch of new sidewalks but instead…

My letter to the Chron opposing the mayor's firefighter pension deal and in favor of local control of our city's pension systems.

Regarding "Parker, firefighters make deal on pensions" (Page B6, March 6), I stand firmly in opposition to this "deal," now memorialized as HB 2572, because it is bad for firefighters and breaks our pledge to fully fund their pensions; it is bad for the city because instead of working to find a long…

For this grocer, food desert is an opportunity

Re-posting an article that appeared in the Houston Chronicle this past December. Proud to see John Vuong's new store become a reality. Thanks to the hard work of many, including the Vuong family, Grocer's Supply and the Housing Department. I'm encouraged by our progress and hopeful this is the first of many more grocery stores in food deserts.

A community meeting will be held tonight at Cullen Middle School (6900 Scott Street) beginning at 6:30 PM to discuss the details of Houston's newest Pyburn's. Come and bring a friend!
