Message to Political Science, Public Affairs, Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Master of Public Administration and Executive Master of Public Administration Fall 2019 Graduates:

Graduation is a celebration. A time to both look back and look forward to the future.

Some people see tomorrow as the unknown. The reality is that tomorrow is the result of what we do today and everyday going forward from here.

If we want a better education system, we have to get involved today and not just stand on the sideline in an ivory tower. We must be leaders in providing answers and making the case for the importance of our public schools and institutions of higher education to the future of our state's long term economic growth and shared and inclusive prosperity for all Texans.

If we want better cities and towns and a better state and nation, you must not only use your education to earn an income, you must also use it to make a positive difference for the people in your community wherever you go from here tonight.

The greatness of our nation is in the goodness of the things we do to help each other aspire to and achieve higher heights.

As you prepare for graduation today remember that you leave here as guardians of a legacy and keepers of the flame of "Excellence In Achievement."

Thank you for all you have done and all you will do in the tomorrows to come.

Be Blessed.

Dr. Michael O. Adams

“Midterm elections are a way for us to express our views on the direction of our nation and State. Historically, it’s been thought of as a referendum on the President. This is the opportunity we have to have our voices heard. Students and people of color haven’t participated at levels on par with older Anglo voters, and the result has been policies we don’t always agree with. If you want to see the direction of our country change—you have to vote!”

The Bicentennial Speech

Constitution Day- September 17, 2018

For the 2018-19 academic school year, the Political Science Department will be sponsoring the TSU - Houston Ideas Festival that will include a series of political town hall meetings. As part of our town hall meetings, we will have a panel of thought leaders which will include faculty from the Political Science, MPA, and eMPA programs plus students and invited guests. The town hall meeting that we have scheduled for Constitution Day will be entitled, “A New Progressive Era: Modernizing the American Political System and Reflections on the U. S. Constitution”. As a foundation for the discussion, we will reflect on Thurgood Marshall’s speech on the Bicentennial of the Constitution.

Our undergraduate constitutional law students and panel will reflect on the following books as part of their discussion:

-Ratification by Pauline Maier
-What Kind of Nation by James F. Simon
-Tyranny of the Majority: Fundamental Fairness in Representative Democracy by Lani Guinier
-And We are Not Saved by Derrick Bell
-Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Derrick Bell

How Texans feel about police department training and budgets, bond reforms and legalizing recreational drugs can be found in the third report released in the UH/TSU collaborative Texas Trends Survey. A large percentage of people surveyed (86% and 74%) support more conflict de-escalation and racial bias training, and 75 oppose cutting police budgets. The project is a 5-year panel study conducted by the Hobby School and the Texas Southern University TSU Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs in the spirit of three Texas greats – Lieutenant Governor Bill Hobby, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and Congressman Mickey Leland – to create a better state for everyone.
