On its next flight, Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), NASA’s Orion Spacecraft will come screaming into the atmosphere from the Moon at a whopping 24,700 mph. The aeroshell – composed of critical heatshield and back shell components – protects the capsule from harm during extreme conditions of re-entry.
Then, a series of 11 parachutes deploy 24,000 ft. above the ground and carry Orion to a soft water landing. In order for that to happen, a portion of the back shell must jettison off at precisely the right time, revealing the drogue parachutes and the three main, 300-lb. parachutes that slow Orion’s speed.
This piece of hardware is called the forward bay cover – and this crucial component for EM-1 was recently moved from its home in Denver to Orion’s Operations & Checkout Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
There, it will be integrated with Orion in preparation for the spacecraft’s 2019 test flight.

Spacesuit Art Project

Great event yesterday and we are happy to be able to support this project.

For those who missed the #UNITY downlink here is the full 20 minutes from the ISS and folks in Mission Control.
Thanks to Nicole Stott "The Artistic Astronaut" for being the champion for this effort.
Thanks to ILC Dover for the countless hours it took to see these suits together.
Thanks Ian Cion for the artistic vision.
Thanks to Gordon and Dylan for their staunch and unwaivering support.

Thanks for all the support from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ESA - European Space Agency, JAXA(宇宙航空研究開発機構), Canadian Space Agency, ROSCOSMOS for building a castle in the sky we can look up at and be inspired by with all you do #offtheearthfortheearth

Thanks to all the courageous kids and their families who painted HOPE, COURAGE, UNITY and now started on EXPLORATION and VICTORY.

And finally all the hospitals MdAnderson Texas Children's Hospital Southlake Regional Health Centre, Cologne University Hospital, International Cancer Center, St Luke's International University Hospital and the Juntendo Hospital and Moscow Institute for Pediatric Oncology that are working to #endcancer and bring an artistic edge to treatment with their wonderful arts in medicine programs.
