HUDL would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who attended our summer workshop, the instructors and interns who taught, and the directors who tirelessly did the heavy lifting to determine best practices. It was another successful HUDL camp, amongst the best especially given the circumstances. To our generous donors and supporters, we could not do it without you.

Dr. Freeman had a profound impact on the lives of his students and was an inspiration to debaters throughout Houston. HUDL's thoughts and prayers are with his family, TSU students and faculty, and those who had the pleasure of knowing him and being educated by him. HUDL will continue to honor his legacy in our thoughts, actions, and to our commitment to the Houston community.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Texas Southern University icon Dr. Thomas F. Freeman. The esteemed debate coach, orator and teacher began his career at TSU in 1949. Serving as a professor of Philosophy, founder of the TSU Debate Team and the Weekend College, and namesake of the Honors College, Dr. Freeman served the institution for over 70 years, interacting with and influencing the lives of thousands of TSU students, faculty and staff members, as well as friends of the university. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Freeman family. His was, indeed, a life well lived.

We share the pain our students, teachers and colleagues are feeling today as a result of the harsh reality of racial injustice and undo persecution. Our hearts, too, are heavy and tired. We acknowledge that these pervasive and harmful societal issues have no place in the world we want for students, ourselves and our families. We support those working for equity and justice and continue to believe in the power of amplifying voices and open dialogue in achieving sustained change. We stand for an equal, just society with freedom from fear and hatred.

National Association for Urban Debate Leagues

HUDL respects the difficult decision made by NAUDL concerning the National Championships. Our heart goes out to the students and coaches, from HUDL and beyond, who will be denied this invaluable opportunity.

As you all know we have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely as we plan for the 2020 Urban Debate National Championship Weekend. Our ongoing conversations between our staff, board, SMU and leagues have led us to cancel the 2020 Urban Debate National Championship and Annual Dinner.

We did not reach this conclusion lightly. The Urban Debate National Championship is our flagship event and the Annual Dinner is our largest organizational fundraiser. We share the heartbreak and disappointment of our students who were looking forward to their national championship in Dallas. However, student and community safety are top priority.

NAUDL will still recognize all UDNC qualifiers. We will also still honor all of our annual award programs, including the Debater of the Year, Coach of the Year and Alumni Ambassador cohort.

To our award recipients, donors, sponsors, SMU and Executive Directors of Urban Debate Leagues, please stay tuned as you will receive more detailed logistical information regarding next steps.

Sometimes data helps us determine the best educational practices of schools and HUDL students stepped up. According to the NAUDL, HUDL preliminary data indicates that, from an adjusted regression, participation in debate was significantly associated with:
- a 13.37 percentile higher Reading SAT score than those
who did not participate in debate,
- an 11.82 percentile higher Math SAT score
- a 12.2 percentile higher Writing SAT score
- and a 0.40 points higher GPA than those who did not
participate in debate.

HUDL is looking forward to new debates over new topics. Good luck to all and I hope you enjoy them.

Debate develops informed and discerning individuals who are vital for a healthy democracy. We strongly encourage all debaters to be active citizens and to engage in public discourse. In that spirit, here are two lessons that will help students differentiate the relative reliability of media sources....
