Dean's Research Scholarship Award Announcement:

The Dean of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston has provided up to ten $2,500 scholarships to recognize senior GSBS students in good academic standing, who have achieved distinction in biomedical research. The deadline to submit applications is June 4, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Please visit https://med.uth.edu/gsec/deans-research-scholarship-awards/ for additional information.

Screening for frailty: Is it useful from the clinical and public health perspectives? (Flyer and photo attached)

You are invited to attend the 8th annual Cheves Smythe Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Texas Medical School Building, 6431 Fannin, Suite MSB 3.001, Houston, Texas 77030. The featured speaker is Luis Miguel Gutierrez-Robledo, Ph.D. of the National Institute of Geriatrics, Mexico. Dr. Gutierrez-Robledo studies the epidemiology of aging and more specifically on frailty and dementia and the interface between both conditions. The lecture is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Life Science Case Studies: The Perils and Rewards of Entrepreneurship (Flyer and photo attached)
Join us on February 27, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner, Mitchell Basic Science Research Building, 3rd floor, Houston, Texas 77030 for the annual alternative career seminar featuring Jack Gill, Ph.D., co-founder, Vanguard Ventures. Dr. Gill will discuss the essential elements of life science startups, including: the origins of intellectual property, startup management, capitalization, execution issues, potential pitfalls, outcomes, and lessons learned. Of the 12 companies to be reviewed… five were successes, five were failures, and two had irrelevant outcomes. The many roles of inventors and academics will be highlighted. A powerful tool for entrepreneur skills assessment will be described. The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Call for Applications for the Dean’s Research Awards

The Dean of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston has provided up to ten $2,500 scholarships to recognize senior GSBS students in good academic standing, who have achieved distinction in biomedical research. The deadline to submit applications is June 4, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

Eligibility: This award is open to GSBS students with advisors who are members of the Medical School Faculty.

· These $2,500 scholarships are considered supplements to the standard GRA stipend.

· Students must have successfully advanced to Ph.D. candidacy prior to the application deadline (June 4, 2013).

· Students must not have received this award in prior years.

· The Medical School Graduate Student Education Committee (GSEC) will review the applications and select the awardees.

· Winners will be announced at the annual Medical School Research Retreat on October 8, 2013.
