BARC Foster

BARC Foster Information, updates and success stories for current and potential BARC fosters. What Does a Foster Do, Exactly? • Fosters change lives. Fosters put in the time and effort the shelter sometimes just isn’t able to due to the numbers of animals we have here.
(21)

Sometimes all a foster needs to do is provide some love and patience and a second chance to a shy dog; other times it’s waking up at three a.m. to bottle-feed some hungry kittens. There are many different options within fostering and many different levels of time and emotional commitment. • With every kind of fostering, though, the goal is the same: to help every foster animal become adoptable and to find every foster animal a forever home. • We can’t control the number of animals coming into BARC, but you can help us control the numbers that make it into loving homes. You can help us give these animals a chance.

These 7 pups have been at BARC for over 3 weeks and would really like a foster home for the holidays! Can you give one of these sweet dogs a temporary foster home?
(Click the photos for more details on each!)

We've got seven dogs who have been here at the shelter for over 3 weeks and would *really* love a Home for the Holidays and are currently seeking a foster or forever home!

We know the holidays look different for many of us this year as we stay apart to keep our loved ones safe, however we'd love to encourage you to make the holidays merry and bright by adopting or fostering a shelter pet!

Olive is still in need! Swee, Olive (A1730598), is scheduled to have her eye removed next week and could really use a place to hang out and recover. She's a timid and nervous girl, but she allows petting, handling, and is a good patient for her eye treatments! We're hoping she'll relax a bit more in a home environment instead of the stressful shelter. Email [email protected] if you are interested in fostering this sweet girl!

Attention Cat Fosters!
We have several sweet kitties that are in need of a little foster TLC due to eye complications.

Olive, A1730598, is scheduled to have her eye removed next week and could really use a place to hang out and recover. She's a timid and nervous girl, but she allows petting, handling, and is a good patient for her eye treatments! We're hoping she'll relax a bit more in a home environment instead of the stressful shelter.

Tobias, A1732341, and Tigger, A1732340, have issues with both eyes and may also need an eye removal. We are unsure if they are able to see minimally or not at all, however this doesn't stop them from sharing all of their love with you! Tigger is outgoing and friendly. He will rub all over your hands and solicit affection while purring loudly! Tobias is a bit more laid back. He enjoys lying in a warm, comfy bed where he will gladly accept head massages and kisses. These boys can go to foster together or separately.

Please reach out to us at [email protected] or 832-395-9031 ASAP if you're able to help these kitties! (We do also have a few more kitties with similar needs!)

Brandon, A1721403, is estimated to be about 4 years old and weighs 85 lbs. Brandon loves attention and going for walks! Even though he's a large breed dog, he's gentle and easy to walk!

Buddy, A1721394, is estimated to be about 11 years old and weighs 85 lbs. He is gentle and happy. He enjoys walk times, treats, and knows how to "shake"!

Toto, A1721410, is estimated to be about 11 years old and weighs 60 lbs. He does the most adorable "happy dance" in his kennel when it's time to go for a walk! He walks nicely on leash and keeps his kennel very clean!

Betty, A1721409, is estimated to be about 12 years old and weighs 40 lbs. She is a wiggly, smiley lady who really enjoys being talked to!

Karli, A1721405, is estimated to be about 12 years old and weighs 50 lbs. She loves walks (and is so good on leash!), keeps her kennel clean, and sits patiently for her meals!

BARC has two litters of bottle babies in need of Foster immediately.

Litter 1: Estimated to be about 3 weeks old. A staff member cared for them over night and described them as good eaters so they should be great for even a new bottle baby foster!

Litter 2: Estimated to be about 1 week or less in age. These guys are having a little trouble nursing & may need some extra help from a more experienced foster. Tube feeding may help with that and our staff can assist with tube training if needed!

Please let us know if you can help any of these ASAP by emailing [email protected] and calling 832-395-9031.

Supplies will be provided!

We have received these three kittens that need a foster today! These cuties are estimated to be about 4 weeks old.
You can learn about the needs of 4 week old kittens here: http://www.kittenlady.org/age

If you are interested in providing a short or long-term foster home for these kittens, please contact us at [email protected] and call 832-395-9031. Supplies provided as available!

At four weeks of age, a kitten's teeth will continue to develop. The long tooth next to the incisors, called the canine teeth, will start to come through the gums.

Four week old kittens will be confidently exploring and developing more coordination that allows them to walk, run, and even begin to play.

Continue providing a heat source for four week old kittens, although they will likely use it only when resting. The kitten's environment should stay comfortably warm and never colder than 70-75 degrees.

Four week old kitten care schedule: orphans of this age should be bottle fed every 5 hours, including overnight. Four week old kittens will generally be using the litter box.

Why foster? Foster families are our partners in helping the puppies, kittens, cats, and dogs who need a little extra TLC before they find their forever homes. Our mission is the same: find homes for these incredible, deserving animals!

Whether you can offer love, patience, and a second chance to a shy dog, or you are a determined nurturer who wakes up at three a.m. to bottle-feed hungry kittens, every home helps twice over! Your generosity helps the pet in your care, and it also helps BARC serve more needy animals in our community!

It is free to foster for BARC, and there are many different levels of time and emotional commitment! We work with you to find fosters who might suit your lifestyle (Active? Foster a 2-year-old dog! Live in a tiny apartment? Foster young kittens!)Whether you can help for five days or five months (the length of time to treat heartworms), we need and greatly appreciate your support!

You can be the biggest advocate for your foster pet! I thought this Maddie's foster marketing guide was a great reference for working on getting your fosters adopted locally or giving information to the transport rescues for placement! 🙂 https://www.maddiesfund.org/.../MF-foster-caregiver... https://heartsspeak.org also has a ton of great resources!
Posting for a friend: “I saw a husky walking on the sidewalk of chimney rock and Bellaire, alone, no leash, no tag. Wanted to stop but there were too many cars.” Is anyone able to go get her? She said she is grey and white. Thanks!

Are you fostering a pandemic puppy or kitten or know someone who did? Or are you interested in learning more about training your puppy or kitten (or adult dog or cat - the same techniques apply)? Friends for Life hosts online puppy (and kitten!) kindergarten classes every week! How cool, right? And they have invited BARC staff, fosters and volunteers to audit the class so we can pass on some of this valuable knowledge to adopters in the future! See below for the schedule and details. The course is 6-week duration and requires a 6 week commitment. BARC volunteers, fosters and staff are welcome to dial in and audit the class. The sessions are 1 hour long with a 30 min Q&A. Every week we discuss various topics including training some basic skills, behavior discussions (including body language, potty training/litter box set up, consent testing / handling, chewing/biting, barking/meowing (excessive), jumping and counter surfing), husbandry & handling (including harness training, crate training, stress free nail trims & vet visits), socialization and enrichment. Every Tuesday at 6pm: Online Kitten Kindergarten. Suitable for kitten or cat owners or individuals interested in basic training and behavior. Every Wednesday at 6pm: Online Puppy Kindergarten. Suitable for puppy or dog owners or individuals interested in basic training and behavior. Every Sunday at 11am: Online Puppy Kindergarten. Suitable for puppy or dog owners or individuals interested in basic training and behavior. Every Sunday at 1pm: Online Kitten Kindergarten. Nelly Needs a Place to Heal! I have too many foster dogs and cant give him the attention he deserves. I will pay $20 a day (like a boarding rate), provide his food, harness, leash, bedding, crate and cone. Really one week would be great. Nelly had his leg amputated on Saturday.
