While Christmas Shopping, don't forget loved ones in nursing homes. For Dementia Patients, as they begin to lose their verbal skills, their other senses become more important for stimulation. Gift Ideas:
1) Soft textured blankets or quilts with varying textures (touch)
2) Scented stuff animal (lavender is calming)
3) Night lights that project lights on the ceiling
4) MUSIC and music player (figure out if they can operate a CD or tape machine on their own. If not, ask to add to their care plan for the music on an MP3 player or on CD to be played each afternoon). Possibly include earphones. Music is great therapy for many dementia patients.
5) Schedule a visit. Even if they confuse you with someone else just human interaction can have a big impact. The gift is truly your presence.
