In Applied Cognitive Psychology (ACP), principles and methods associated with Cognitive Psychology are applied to the Human-Machine Interface to improve the usability and effectiveness of the interface. Human Factors is a common term associated with ACP and includes research regarding humans' psychological, social, physical, and biological characteristics. The sub-plan at UHCL is primarily focused
on the application of that information to the design, operation, or use of products to optimize performance, health, or safety. The sub-plan includes a course sequence that can prepare the student to take the exam to become a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) or Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP). Additionally, students who are interested in going on to doctoral programs associated with Applied Cognitive Psychology can work closely with the ACP faculty at UHCL on research to prepare them for advanced research at a doctoral institution. UHCL has one of the few Master's programs in the state of Texas explicitly designed to prepare people to work in industry upon graduation.
