The Coast Guard has staged response assets and is urging safety precautions ahead of two tropical systems impacting the Gulf Coast this week.

“These systems produce incredible amounts of rainfall in short periods of time, so we are urging people in the area to remain vigilant,” said Cmdr. Mickey Dougherty, area commander for the Marco/Laura response. “Our ability to conduct rescues can be diminished or non-existent at the height of a storm, but we have our crews staged and ready to respond to emergencies immediately after each storm passes.”

Tropical Storm Marco is expected to make landfall Monday afternoon, and Tropical Storm Laura is expected to reach hurricane strength before it makes landfall Thursday. Both systems are expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal areas.

Hurricanes and tropical storms can be deadly, and the Coast Guard is urging people to be prepared, stay informed and heed storm warnings.

Please welcome our new Ombudsman Kendra Havlik! Below is her background information and contact email address:

My name is Kendra Havlik and I am excited to be serving as the new ombudsman for MSST Houston. The role of an ombudsman it to act as a liaison between families and the unit’s command. The ombudsman can also connect you with many services offered through the Coast Guard or the community to help your family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with your questions/concerns/needs. My contact information is at the end of this post.

A little about me: I am wife to BMC “Chuck” Havlik and a stay at home mom to a 6-year old boy and a 21-month old girl. I am a Coast Guard veteran and I have been navigating the Coast Guard spouse life for the past seven years, all through deployable units.
We got married and had our first child while Chuck was stationed at the Mobile Training Branch in Yorktown, VA. That unit was internationally deployed for more than half the year, so I was alone A LOT in a new city with a new baby.

The next duty station was an 87’ boat out of Freeport. During that time, Chuck’s schedule was unpredictable and he always seemed to be gone at the most inconvenient times, like during Hurricane Harvey and for a two month period beginning when our daughter was two weeks old (our son was four).
While Chuck was stationed on the 87, I returned to college and began work on my Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and Management at AMU online. I finally earned that degree in June.

I say all this, not to whine, complain or boast, but to let you know that I have been where some of you are right now. A new mom, a student, mom of two, etc. I get it! “Holding down the fort” at home is not always an easy feat! Kids, school and having your own job/life can add to that challenge, especially when your spouse cant always be there to help. I like to believe that Chuck’s deployments have made me stronger and have given me the opportunity to figure out how to navigate a few of the resources we have in the Coast Guard spouse world. Through my role as the unit ombudsman, I hope I can pass along some of my knowledge, learn from you all, and find answers to your quandaries if/when I don’t know. Please take note of the contact information below and do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions/concerns/needs you have. I look forward to meeting all of you soon!
