In the 1940’s, HPD was one of a few major cities in the south that employed black officers. Senior Police Officer Edward A. Thomas (affectionately known as Mr. Thomas) made history when he graduated from HPD class #1 in 1948. He patrolled the streets of Houston during a time of segregation and was not afforded many opportunities early in his career because of the color of his skin. Officer Thomas rose above and went on to show decades of professional resilience as he served the city of Houston for 63 years with a distinguish career as a trailblazer.

Mr. Thomas holds the record for the longest-serving officer in HPD history. In 2015, HPD headquarters was officially named the Edward A. Thomas Building, forever etching Mr. Thomas’ name in history.

Outstanding Officer

Congratulations to Precinct 5 Sgt. DeAndre Bains, who has been named Outstanding Officer of the Year by the Afro-American Police Officers League. Sgt. Bains received his award this weekend at AAPOL Houston's Annual Gala, which raised thousands of dollars for college-bound students in the Houston area.

Sgt. Bains has served the citizens of Precinct 5 for 13 years. He has spent most of the last 3 years in Constable Ted Heap's Strategic Response Unit, where he was an integral part of his team receiving the Constable's Unit Commendation for exceptional performance of duty and dedication to professionalism and excellence.

Sgt. Bains has incredible character and a strong sense of duty. He takes pleasure in sharing his experiences with new deputies as well as training citizens in self-defense awareness and avoidance as a certified RAD (R**e Aggression Defense) instructor. Over his years with our precinct, Sgt. Bains has consistently demonstrated a high degree of initiative and service to the department and the community by serving with Honor, Integrity and Service.

Is it Time for a Black Sheriff in Harris County, TX?

Since the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was organized in March 1836 there have been 30 Sheriff’s elected or appointed to serve Harris County in over 185 years, but there has never been an African American Sheriff appointed or elected in Harris County. Today at noon central Host of Real Talk Junkies - RTJs, Jeffrey L. Boney is back with another LIVE episode! He is sitting down with Smokie Phillips, Harris County Sheriff and AAPOL Houston member to discuss the question: Is it Time for a Black Sheriff in Harris County, TX?

What do you think?

Tune in, like, share, but most of all COMMENT to join the LIVE conversation.

We can't wait to hear your thoughts! !
“You need to have a police department that looks like the community. It’s the only way that you serve the community with any kind of justice.” Today at 4 pm, we are featuring DeAndre’ Hutchison, an Alief Independent School District grad and now president of AAPOL Houston.

This week I gave my first presentation on the Homes for Heroes program to AAPOL Houston the Afro-American Police Officers League of Houston! 🏡💰Did you know that local heroes (like police officers, nurses, active military, firefighters, & teachers) can save $700 on every $100,000 of their purchase price when buying and/or selling a home if working with an affiliate like myself?! 😎
Thank you so much to President Hutchison & the Board for this opportunity & the dedicated work of AAPOL!
Share this post with the heroes in your life & contact me for more details!

Thank you AAPOL Houston for your endorsement!!
Dear AAPOL Houston,

I was so honored to be one of the recipients of the AAPOL Scholarships. When I opened the mail, your gift was such a welcomed surprise! Your timing couldn’t have been better as I entered college this week at the University of Texas at Austin for the Fall 2020 semester! Thanks to your financial support you have contributed to my lifelong dream of receiving my Bachelors Degree in History and Government. I am so encouraged by this generous educational gift and I wish nothing but continued success to AAPOL Houston and the law enforcement community! Thanks again... (Kameryn Guilbeau)
