We took some of our seniors on a road trip to Galveston to see the dedication of the new mural "Absolute Equality" in memory of where the final enslaved Texans were told of their freedom. Such a special moment to share with our community. #Juneteenth

06/19/2021

In 1865, my ancestors broke their chains and left the plantations. Juneteenth was a day filled with the promise of opportunity and freedom.

Yet Black people today are still dealing with the chains of years of Jim Crow, of discrimination in housing and employment, and of mass incarceration and criminalization.

As we celebrate the first Juneteenth as a federal holiday, I hope that we can all reflect on how we can fulfill the promise of that first Juneteenth in 1865.

Texas grid operator urges electricity conservation as many power generators are unexpectedly offline and temperatures rise

As the heat settles in, you can conserve electricity by setting the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher; turning off lights and pool pumps; avoiding use of large appliances such as ovens, washing machines and dryers; and turning off or unplugging unused electric appliances.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas says a large number of power plants are offline, but it could not provide details as to what may be causing the “very concerning” number of outages. At the same time, the state is experiencing near-record demand for electricity in June.

Another rainy day is in store across SE TX, with showers and storms developing near the coast this morning and expanding inland during the day. Some stronger storms may produce locally heavy downpours, which could result in street flooding. #houwx #txwx #glswx #bcswx

Where do I find the list of rules governing photography at Challenger Park? I live close to the park and have taken family photos there for years. I'm also a high school photography teacher. I have taken students there for the past few years to take pictures at the park. We were told by Chad Adkins that photography is prohibited at the park and we can no longer do that. When was that decision made and where are the rules prohibiting photography posted? I have a lot of questions.
Significant weather is moving through Harris County. Please continue rely on updates at ReadyHarris. Avoid high water on roadways.
I strongly oppose the 8% tax increase you are proposing. It appears that once Democrats get elected (no matter their position) all they want to do is increase taxes instead of looking closely at the budget on what can be either cut or eliminated.
