Sending a Document to El Salvador? Here's What to Think About First.

Planning to send a U.S. document to El Salvador?

Don't start by asking, “How much is an Apostille?”

Start with these questions:

What document do you have?
Which state issued it?
Who issued or notarized it?
Where in El Salvador will it be presented?
When do you need it?

Why does this matter?

Because the correct authentication process depends on the document and how it was issued. For Texas documents, the Texas Secretary of State handles Apostilles for qualifying Texas public records and properly notarized Texas documents. Its current request form also requires you to identify the country where the document will be presented.

And here's something many people don't realize:

Not every document starts at the same place.

A birth certificate, Power of Attorney, driver's-license copy, court document, business document, or federal background check can have different requirements.

For example, Texas says its Secretary of State does not Apostille federal documents such as an FBI background check; those are handled through the U.S. Department of State.
