(24)

For campers 8-18 years old. Girls Rock Camp Houston is a one-week summer day camp formed in October 2009 to offer girls (ages 8-18 years old) music and art based workshops. Targeted areas include: musical development, self-esteem enhancement, creation of their own music, friendship and community building, and nurturing individual talents within a cooperative atmosphere. Additionally, girls will benefit from physical & artistic activities that complement their music instruction. Goals for the program include empowerment of girls & women though music and providing the opportunity for all definitions of girls & women to succeed in any music-related venture. Girls of all backgrounds and musical levels are encouraged to apply, since a limited number of scholarships will be provided. Girls Rock Camp Houston will offer campers a chance to write their own songs in a band setting and perform them during a concert at an actual live music venue at the end of the week long session. Girls attend workshops each day. Workshop examples can include:

Songwriting
Women in Music History
Communication and Team BuildingDJ skills
Band Art
Gender and Identity

VIRTUAL CAMP THEME SONG PERFORMANCE:

If you have attended any of our End of Camp showcases, you know we always close the show with everyone on stage singing our camp theme song, Don’t Be Afraid To Be Weird. We don’t have a showcase this year but that doesn’t mean we can’t sing the song together! All of the digital content instrument instructors (plus our wonderful camp week drum instructor, Rachel Hulsey) recorded their parts for this virtual performance. Turn it up and sing along!

Girls Rock Camp Alliance

Black Lives Matter. The Girls Rock Camp Alliance stands in unconditional solidarity with those protesting racist police violence. We support communities rising against state violence and mourning the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, and so many others.

Anti-Black racism impacts every piece of society, including the Girls Rock movement. It is the responsibility of the GRCA and our member organizations to examine how we can dismantle oppressive structures, now and every day to come.

We have seen many of our members taking individual action and wish to invite member organizations to collective action. One of many possible starting points could include signing the petition released by Black Lives Matter on Saturday and continuing this work in your local community: “We call for an end to the systemic racism that allows this culture of corruption to go unchecked and our lives to be taken.”

UPDATE FROM GIRLS ROCK CAMP HOUSTON:

It is with heavy hearts that we let you all know that we have had to make the difficult decision to not hold an in-person session this summer. Due to health and safety concerns for our campers and volunteers, it is becoming more and more apparent that the best thing we can do is stay home and plan for next summer. Our coordinators team is hard at work planning online content to offer free of charge for anyone interested in summer activities.

To parents who already registered for camp: unless otherwise instructed, we will process refunds beginning this week.

Thank you to our wonderful community for all the support the last ten years. We have never missed a camp season but these are unprecedented times. However, we will be back next summer STRONGER THAN EVER!

Best,
GIRLS ROCK CAMP HOUSTON
