Happy Independence Day Haiti 🇭🇹

Happy Haitian Independence Day! Haiti was the first black republic in the world to abolish slavery. On this day more than 200 years ago, General Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared the nation independent after French forces were defeated. Today, the Haitian Community is celebrating their independence and we celebrate with them! Happy Independence Day! #haitianindependenceday #wiadca #newyorkcarnival #brooklyn #independenceday

The annual Houston Super Feast is going to look a little different this year. Instead of the traditional hot meal there will be grab-and-go food baskets to keep people safe during the pandemic.

The Houston Super Feast is one of the country's largest meal gatherings has helped families in need during #Thanksgiving and around #Christmas for the past four decades. Under normal circumstances, families sit down to share meals at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This year, Super Feast will hand out food baskets instead with walk-up and drive-up options. The hope is that families will have baskets of food during the holidays in November and December. The baskets will have a frozen turkey, ham, or chicken, canned goods, and other non-perishable items that should last about a week.

*Super Feast doors open at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and will be open until 2 p.m.
Face masks will be required.

Multiple #COVID19 vaccines are being developed and manufactured in the United States, and the first vaccines could be cleared for use by the FDA in the coming weeks.

Initial doses will be allocated for critical populations, including health care workers, other essential workers, and people more likely to develop severe disease, like older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

As vaccine availability increases in 2021, people will be able to get vaccinated at doctor’s offices, pharmacies, hospitals and other “usual” sites. Vaccine will be provided at no cost by CDC and shipped directly to vaccine providers along with supplies.

HHD will serve in its traditional safety net provider role, offering vaccine at its health centers, multi-service centers and deploying other strategies to ensure vaccine is available to all Houstonians, as needed.

Each vaccine recipient will receive a card with information about the vaccine they received, and doses administered will be recorded in ImmTrac2, the state immunization registry, so that providers and recipients can ensure they receive the correct second dose.

Even when vaccines are available, people will need to #MaskUp, #SocialDistance and #WashHands hands to help stop the spread of COVID-19 as people get vaccinated and we learn more about the immunity produced by the vaccines.

Caribbean American Heritage Month

National Caribbean-American Heritage Month Marks Thirteenth Celebration in 2018

During Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we honor America’s long-shared history with our neighbors in the Caribbean and celebrate the Caribbean Americans who have enriched our Nation.

Caribbean Americans embody the American spirit, with their talents and hard work contributing greatly to America’s economy. They protect our citizens as law enforcement officers, serve our communities as public officials, and mentor our country’s young people as educators. Through their tremendous athleticism and determination, they have brought pride to the hearts of the American people as members of numerous U.S. Olympic teams. Their leadership and resolve have made incredible contributions to our society.
