Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9

Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 Emergency Services District #9 (ESD #9) is a political subdivision of the State of Texas and serving the Cy Fair area. Emergency Services District #9 (ESD #9) is a political subdivision of the State of Texas and serving the Cy Fair area as a taxing district to support your emergency services, such as fire suppression and ambulance services (EMS).

Established in 1984, the district is governed by a board of five commissioners who are elected for 4 year terms. They must be residents or property owners in the district. They are supported by a General Manager and their support staff. ESD #9 collects taxes, which are based on appraisals of real and personal property such as single-family residential, multi-family residential , commercial and raw land. The district commissioners then contract with the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and fund their delivery of services to the community. The commissioners gather once a month at a public meeting to review budget, requests, and activities of the fire department and ambulance services. Those meetings are held at the business office at 9630 Telge Road, Houston, TX 77095. In 2003, ESD #9, in partnership with Lone Star College-Cy Fair and the CFVFD, built a state of the art education facility that trains volunteers as well as provides Fire Science and EMS programs, accredited by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and Texas Department of Health. In 2004, the CFVFD, with support from the ESD, opened its 7,000 foot , state of the art communications and dispatch center. The building is National Fire Protection Agency compliant and can operate on independent generators in the event of power failure. The ESD #9 continues to use your tax dollars to provide excellent emergency services to its residents

#FireSafetyFriday - Space Heater Safety!

Sure, we know we are early, but the artic weather is hitting tonight and temperatures are forecasted to hit below freezing in the Houston Area. So, here are the #FireSafetyFriday tips as we go into the cold evening.

Arctic blasts can severely disrupt day-to-day routines, and more importantly quality of life, quickly putting millions of lives in danger. According to the National Fire Protection Association, while only 32 percent of home heating fires involve space heaters, space heaters are involved in 79 percent of home heating fire deaths.

Heating equipment continues to be the second leading cause of home fires behind cooking and the second leading cause of home fire deaths behind smoking.

As temperatures drop, if you are using a space heater to warm up, please be sure to plug all space heaters directly into a wall outlet and always turn it off when leaving the room or going to bed. Space heaters need to be plugged in directly to the outlet, not through an extension cord or power strip.

Make sure your space heater is on level ground, floor, or surface and not able to be tipped over during use. Confirm your space heater has a shut-off feature if it is tipped over by any means. Make sure the surface you place your space heater on is heat-resistant beyond the capability of the heater.

You will also want to establish a 3-foot kid and pet-free zone around the heater, and never put a space heater in a child’s room. Finally, keep your space heaters at least 3 feet away from combustible materials like furniture, bedding, and curtains.

In addition to space heater safety, remember that it is unsafe to try heating your home with your range top, stove, and/or oven as well. These appliances are not meant to heat spaces and should be used for cooking purposes only.

Here is more information on winter heating and space heaters. https://www.nfpa.org/public-education/by-topic/top-causes-of-fire/heating

Today we remember a day we will never forget. God Bless America!

Eighteen years after September 11, 2001, we continue to honor the sacrifice made by our Fire, EMS, and Police brothers and sisters. We remember the personal and national losses on that day.

We pause to honor them this morning at 8:03 a.m. with a moment of silence. We honor the great sacrifice made by 343 firefighters, 8 EMS and 61 police officers who perished on that fateful day.

May we always remember and never forget.
