Today is the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) laureate announcement, which recognizes authors and storytellers in the field of children’s literature. This year’s recipient is American author Laurie Halse Anderson! Congrats!
Today we present three Swedish women who have all contributed immensely to children’s literature: Astrid Lindgren, Katarina Taikon and Selma Lagerlöf. Enjoy!
Astrid Lindgren: One of Sweden’s most famous authors of children’s literature. Her books are known for their humor, warmth and celebration of the imagination and spirit of childhood. Her stories have been translated into more than 100 languages!
Katarina Taikon: As a Romani in Sweden, she experienced discrimination and prejudice from a young age. She began writing books for children, drawing on her own experiences. Her famous book, Katitzi, tells a story of a young Romani girl who faces discrimination, but finds strength in her family and community.
Selma Lagerlöf: A Swedish author and the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. Her writing is known for its vivid descriptions of nature, and strong female characters. Today, Lagerlöf is regarded as one of Sweden’s greatest writers.

The Stronger – Jan 15th to Feb 7th, 2021
Two rival actresses run into each other at a café on Christmas night. One seems to have everything: a husband, children, prosperity, and shopping bags laden with Christmas gifts. The other sits silently at her table not speaking a word. As events unfold, it becomes clear that things aren’t what they seem, and it is perhaps the silent one who has everything…has stolen everything.
A Half Sheet of Paper – Jan 22nd to Feb 14th, 2021
A man is moving out of his apartment and makes one last check through the empty spaces to make sure nothing has been forgotten. By the telephone, he finds a small sheet of paper full of notes and scribblings that calls forth a flood of memories of the highs and lows of his two years living there.
Pariah – June 4th to July 4th, 2021
Two archeologists marvel over a chest of gold artifacts one of them has found. Moral questions about what to do with this gold rise to the surface as troubling questions about the men’s criminal pasts are probed to their very depths.

Her conventional painting became the source of financial income. But her 'life's work' remained a quite separate practice.
Hilma af Klint belonged to a group called "The Five", a circle of women who shared her belief in the importance of trying to make contact with what she called the "High Masters"—often by way of séances.
Her paintings were abstract and geometric. These paintings were not appreciated by her audience. She therefore packed away approx.1200 paintings which she hid away to be opened 20 years after her death.
In her will, Hilma af Klint left all her abstract paintings to her nephew, Erik af Klint. When the boxes were opened at the end of the 1960s, very few persons had knowledge of what would be revealed.
Her art work has since been exhibited both in Europe and in the US.
