Latinas Rising

Latinas Rising believes that many Latinas and Latinx are leading the fight for social justice through their chosen professions and academic work. Our presence in the fields of law, education, and advocacy is making a difference in changing the social political landscape for our communities. Simply being present in these spaces, traditionally not occupied by us, is changing our landscape for future generations.

We are ecstatic to present our featured "Latinas in Law, Advocacy, and Education Panel" for the inaugural LatinaCon 2019.

Presenting Dr. Yolanda Rios,

Dr. Yolanda Rios was born and raised in Houston, TX. She is a proud UHD Alumni and the first in her family to graduate from college. Over the years she has spent countless hours serving organizations that contribute to success in the areas of Hispanic Leadership and Bilingual Education.

Dr. Rios currently serves the New Caney ISD community as the Director of Multilingual by providing services for students and families of English Learners and Immigrants/Migrant students. This role has allowed her to provide educational access to students who are learning English by providing resources and training teachers on strategies to help their students succeed.

Her recent research contributions are in the areas of Hispanic dropouts, school attendance, and graduation rates. At the young age of 27, she completed her doctorate at Sam Houston State University and has continued to have an interest in how school climate affects Hispanic student achievement.

Dr. Rios’ continued passion comes from the idea that the world can be a better place if we first believe in our future, and our students.

In Texas, voters elected Sen. Sylvia Garcia to Congress (making her and Veronica Escobar the first Latinas to represent Tx in the House). We are calling on Gov. Greg Abbott to immediately schedule a special election to fill Garcia’s state Senate District 6 seat. Gov. Abbott must act now to provide voters the confidence and representation they deserve.

"Mario Salinas, Co-founder of the Emerging Latino Leaders Fellowship and civic engagement coordinator for T.E.J.A.S. in Houston, agrees with the Pew study in that it has become more difficult to be Latino in the United States under the current administration.

Salinas said that in the months after the 2016 election, “I had a family member get heckled in public parking lots on two separate occasions.” He said that in one of the instances the person was yelled “We're going to send y’all back now!” while the other involved racial slurs.

“At a time when over 50 percent of youth in Texas are Latino, having a national figure paint us all with a broad brush, in a negative way, isn't constructive at all for the future of our state,” said Salinas."

Most protests in Washington, DC, are one-day affairs consisting of a march or rally with some speakers and a musical guest or two. A handful, though, have been long term, with protestors spending days or weeks camped out in the capital to fight for their cause.

Two of the most significant of these encampments, the Bonus Army and the Poor People’s Campaign, are covered in the audiovisual holdings of the Special Media Division at the National Archives.

Today, the Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative (HILSC), with the help of Boat People SOS, BakerRipley, United We Dream, Mi Familia Vota and other partners, announced expansion of its Immigrant Rights hotline. The updated hotline capacity will ensure that cases of profiling are brought to the attention of legal advocates, and will connect callers to local action and advocacy opportunities in order to fight against deportations abuse from enforcement agents. These are in addition to the hotline’s current capacity as a connection point to free and low-cost immigration legal services, and up-to-the-moment information about current immigration law and the policies that affect non-citizen residents of the greater Houston region. Beginning March 12, 2018, the hotline (833-HOU-IMMI) will take calls from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Calls will be taken in Spanish and English, with interpretation available in Vietnamese, Mandarin, Arabic, and other languages.
