Effective immediately (8/7), Centennial Beach/Fort Meadow Reservoir is officially re-open for swimming! Thank you for your patience as we worked to ensure the water was safe for recreational use!

Our most recent water sample came in well below the limit, and our geomean (average of our last 5 samples) was also below the requirement. We will continue to test weekly, and as always, will keep you informed.

Please see Hudson Recreation for updates on their programming at the beach.

Enjoy our beautiful Centennial Beach and Fort Meadow Reservoir! 🏊‍♀️🏊🏊‍♂️

Centennial Beach remains closed for swimming due to high levels of E. Coli‼️ We are awaiting additional test results and will provide updates as soon as they become available.

We understand that there are questions and confusion due to the fact that Marlborough’s Memorial Beach has not been closed for swimming, and yes, the water is in fact the same. 😁

The explanation for this… Marlborough’s side of the beach was last sampled on Monday, July 31st and did not return high levels of E. Coli. The Hudson sample was taken more recently on Thursday, August 3rd. The results returned on Friday the 4th stating high levels of E. Coli, at which time we made the decision to close the beach for swimming. Marlborough did not have enough time by the time we shared our results with them on Friday to get another sample and get it to the lab before they closed for the weekend. We did, however, take another sample from our side of the beach on Friday the 4th; we are awaiting the results. Both sides of the beach are tested once a week, typically on different days. Levels can change rather quickly and are impacted by many different factors.

We thank you for your continued patience! We wish to get the beach re-open ASAP, just as you do. 😁

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT‼️

Please be advised that the waters at Centennial Beach/Fort Meadow Reservoir were recently found containing high levels of E. Coli. As a result, the waters at Centennial Beach/Fort Meadow Reservoir are CLOSED TO SWIMMING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! Additional testing is underway and updates will be provided as they become available. We will re-open the beach for swimming as soon as it is safe to do so.

If you were recently in the waters at Centennial Beach/Fort Meadow Reservoir, you are likely low-risk, but you should monitor for signs of E. Coli. The most common signs are bloody diarrhea and stomach pains. We strongly recommend you contact a medical provider if you have any questions/concerns. You can read more about E. Coli here: https://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/qa_ecoli_sickness.htm

The Health Department tests the waters at Centennial Beach/Fort Meadow Reservoir on a weekly basis throughout the entire beach season. This is the first result we have received this season that is above the allowable limit. While we are not sure what exactly has caused the increased level this week, the most common causes of E. Coli are:

💧 Recent rain. When it rains, water runs over the ground, picks up E.coli and carries it to ponds, lakes, streams and rivers.

🦆 Large presence of waterfowl. Bird f***s contribute both bacteria and pathogens to the water.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Many people. There’s a correlation between the number of people at beaches and high bacteria counts in the water.

Again, we will provide updates as soon as they are available. We thank you in advance for your patience and for heeding this Public Health Advisory.

Today, on the birthday of modern nursing pioneer Florence Nightengale, we recognize and celebrate all the amazing nurses out there!

We especially want to shout out our very own Public Health Nurse, Michelle Andrade, who worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to do so today, ensuring that all residents who need medical support have it… and so much more! 🩺💉

We’d also like to take this moment to thank former Board of Health member and nurse, Christie Vaillancourt, for her years of service, especially for her leadership as the chair of the board throughout the pandemic. And lastly, we are excited to welcome our new board member and HPS nurse, Allyson O’Malley!

Happy Nurses Week to all! We thank you and we appreciate all that you do for so many! ❤️

This let's raise awareness about alcohol misuse and take action to prevent it, both at home and in the community. Raising awareness is important in preventing alcohol-related deaths.

Here are just a few ideas on what you can do to help start make a difference:
- Encourage friends or family members to make small changes, like keeping track of their drinking and setting drinking limits.
- Share tips with parents to help them talk with their kids about the risks of alcohol use.
- Ask doctors and nurses to talk to their patients about the benefits of drinking less or quitting.
- Get active. Stay occupied in a productive way, such as exercising, practicing hobbies, or talking with friends and family.
- Assess your habits and symptoms. Check out the online self-assessment tools created by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to help you determine if the drinking is escalating, and causing distress or harm.

If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol misuse, visit https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline for more information.

❄️IMPORTANT WEATHER ALERT❄️

From the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency:

The National Weather Service, in conjunction with the State Meteorologist, is predicting a period of dangerously cold and windy weather to impact the region today and Saturday. Overnight a strong cold front brought an arctic airmass into the region. Temperatures have dropped throughout the early morning hours and will continue to drop throughout the day and overnight. Saturday morning lows will be below zero for much of the state, with afternoon highs only reaching single digits. Temperatures will warm up quickly by Sunday, with daytime highs in the mid-30s to lower 40s forecast.

Today through Saturday morning, widespread gusty winds of 40-45 MPH are likely for much of the Commonwealth. Stronger wind gusts of 50-60MPH are possible along the coast and across Central Massachusetts and the Berkshires. In addition, wind gusts of 20- 40 MPH are expected throughout the region on Sunday.

The combination of cold temperatures and gusty winds will result in widespread wind chills of 20 to 35 degrees below zero. Wind chills in Central Massachusetts and the Berkshires could reach 40 to 45 degrees below zero.

Impacts/Potential Impacts:
❄️Bitterly cold temperatures and gusty winds will lead to dangerous wind chill temperatures. Exposure to these wind chills may result in hypothermia and frostbite. Exposed skin can become frostbitten in as little as 10 minutes under forecast conditions.
⚡️Power outages are possible due to strong winds.

Moms, you are not alone!

Maternal mental health is the range of feelings you can have during and after pregnancy. Pregnancy and the postpartum period (time after delivery) can bring on lots of strong emotions, such as feeling overwhelmed, sad, concerned you aren't good enough as a mom, among many other emotions. For some, these feelings are fleeting. For others, they are more serious and may stay for months.

If you're not feeling yourself for more than two weeks, make sure to reach out and find help. Difficulties such as depression and anxiety around pregnancy and after the baby is born are common and treatable. They affect new parents of every culture, age, gender, race, and income level.

Call or text the FREE and confidential National Maternal Health Hotline 24/7 at 1-833-9-HELP4MOMS / 1-833-943-5746.

12/30/2022

Attached is the revised Hudson COVID-19 report for the past 6 weeks. Based on community feedback, we are reporting county Wastewater data rather than COVID-19 cases. This decision is partly due to the fact that many people are taking at-home COVID-19 tests, which do not get reported to the State or Town. Wastewater data tells you how much COVID-19 virus is in wastewater. Virus gets into the wastewater when people "shed" the virus while using the bathroom.

Trends in wastewater data predict COVID-19 cases. For example, when the amount of virus in wastewater goes up, we typically see a rise in COVID-19 cases. We can therefore use wastewater data to assess how much COVID-19 virus is in the community, and what protective steps should be taken.
We have also added vaccination data to this monthly report. We continue to encourage residents to stay up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters.

Please leave any feedback in the comments, and we will adjust future reports as needed to ensure we keep Hudson residents informed!

You may have heard that COVID-19 vaccines do not work. However, if you look at data from across the US, it becomes clear that COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of (1) catching COVID-19, and (2) dying from COVID-19. The following graphs help visualize the difference in outcomes between vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

For more COVID-19 data, see https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/ -home
On 10/29/21, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children age 5-11.

In the U.S., COVID-19 cases in children 5 through 11 years of age make up 39% of cases in individuals younger than 18 years of age. According to the CDC, approximately 8,300 COVID-19 cases in children 5 through 11 years of age resulted in hospitalization. As of Oct. 17, 691 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the U.S. in individuals less than 18 years of age, with 146 deaths in the 5 through 11 years age group.

Vaccination among children is an important step in protecting all people from COVID-19.

See the full press release from FDA: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-authorizes-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-emergency-use-children-5-through-11-years-age
During the month of October, the number of COVID-19 cases in Hudson increased by 106.

As a reminder, more people are now eligible for COVID-19 boosters! Remember, COVID-19 vaccines reduce your risk of (1) catching and spreading COVID-19, and (2) being hospitalized or dying from COVID-19 if you do get sick.

Attached is the latest Hudson Vaccination Report, with data as of 10/28.

Note: The next Vaccination Report will be published at the end of November. Monthly reports will replace weekly reports moving forward.

Achieving a high vaccination rate is the best way to protect our community from undue harm from COVID-19. We strongly encourage all eligible residents to get a COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community. The COVID-19 vaccine is an effective way to reduce your risk of getting sick and needing to be hospitalized. This is particularly important as the highly contagious Delta variant accounts for nearly all new COVID-19 cases in MA. COVID-19 vaccines among youth 12 years and older can also help our schools retain low COVID-19 transmission levels.

Sign up for your vaccine at vaxfinder.mass.gov.

We understand that news stories around the COVID-19 vaccine may be confusing, scary, or even conflicting. Please let us know if you have any questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, and we will gladly respond in a future post.
Attached is information regarding the Test and Stay Program. The program allows students exposed to COVID-19 in school to stay in school if they have no symptoms and receive daily negative rapid tests for a set period of time after exposure.

The program does not apply to students who were exposed to COVID-19 in non-school settings. This is because the program is meant to address school-based exposures, and is regulated by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Please note that we must follow DESE guidelines for the Test and Stay program.

For more on the program from Hudson Public Schools, see https://www.hudson.k12.ma.us/important_information/c_o_v_i_d-19_information/c_o_v_i_d-19_test_and_stay_program

More people are now eligible for COVID-19 boosters! You may also mix-and-match different vaccines when you get your booster shot.

As always, the first priority is that unvaccinated individuals receive their initial doses of vaccine. Then, after 2-6 months, some individuals may be eligible for a booster according to their age, medical conditions, and living/working conditions.

Remember, COVID-19 vaccines reduce your risk of (1) catching and spreading COVID-19, and (2) being hospitalized or dying from COVID-19 if you do get sick.

Note: Starting in November, 2021, we will be moving to a monthly vaccination report that will replace weekly reports.
