Salem firefighters recently teamed up with Ashley Hudson firefighters to participate in air consumption drills conducted in zero visibility conditions. The training focused on improving air management, communication, and situational awareness in high-stress, low-visibility environments, helping to strengthen operational readiness and teamwork between the departments. Working side by side, crews challenged themselves to operate efficiently and safely while reinforcing essential firefighting skills. A sincere thank you to all the instructors who dedicated their time and expertise to making this valuable training possible and ensuring its success.

Today at approximately 1304 hours, the Salem Center Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house explosion. While en route, responding units were advised of heavy black smoke and visible flames. Due to the severity of conditions, a fire officer requested mutual aid for additional manpower and tanker support.
First-arriving crews encountered heavy smoke and fire, with the structure rapidly deteriorating. An aggressive fire attack was initiated; crews began to push inside, however, conditions inside the residence were determined to be structurally unsafe, and operations were transitioned to a defensive-only strategy.
The fire was brought under control in just over one hour. Crews remained on scene for an extended period to conduct overhaul and hot spot control. Approximately 44 firefighters responded to the incident.
Salem Center would like to thank Orland Fire, Ashley-Hudson, Stroh, Fremont, and Angola Fire Departments for their assistance on scene. During this incident, Salem Center also handled a simultaneous medical run.
