On this Memorial Day, we think of Ansel Pratt Loring who was killed during the Civil War while on duty, outside of New Orleans.

Ansel was born 2 June 1830 to Samuel and Lucy Pratt Loring His great grandfather Samuel Loring and his great great grandfather Samuel Loring both served during the Revolutionary War.

Sergeant Ansel Loring served in Company E, 47th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and was killed on duty, 4 June 1863, two days after his 33rd birthday.

Ansel was one of three from Hull who were killed in the Civil War. The others were Nathaniel R. Hooper, Company F, 20th Massachusetts Infantry, killed at Fredericksburg, December 11, 1862. And John M. Cleverly, Company A, 3rd Rhode Island Cavalry, killed in New Orleans.

I realized it has been quite some time since I posted an up date. All of the big projects are complete but, we still have some finishing touches to take care of. They say, when you own an old house the work in never done.

We had to rebuild the wall above the fireplace in the kitchen. That project was completed about a year ago but I never finished the mantle.

Today, I used one the board we removed from the outside of the house, it was 19' long and 22" wide, to finish off the front and sides of the mantle as well as the mantle shelf.

Lost of precision measuring and hand tools to get it just right. Still need to fit the mantle shelf but we are almost there.

Cross another project off the list!

Thanks to Robert Preble for all of the help.

SOLD Repurposed Sewing Machine Table
$125

Repurposed antique Jordan Marsh Co sewing machine table base with reclaimed wood top from the Commercial Square Decor workshop. Top could be refinished or left as is. We've used this for several purposes over the years - as a table for my modern sewing machine, for plants, and more recently in our dining room as a spare table. However, since moving into our new-old home we just can't make it work well in the space. Please note that the table is heavy, so a second person is recommended for pickup. Local area delivery can be arrange for an additional fee.
Measurements are as follows: 40" w x 20.25" d x 29" h

Recently, we learned that at the time the house was built, the land was covered in coastal grass there were no trees. Apparetly, trees are not native to this part of Hull due to the high clay content in the soil.

At present, the hillside is covered with Norway Maples and Ash. Norway Maples transmit a toxin in the ground that kills everything around it and because of the poor soil, they eventually die.

We are working with our neighbors and the great folx at Suburban Lumberjacks in Hull to begin the slow process of returning the hillside to what once was.
