We have nearly 465,000 members nationwide who volunteer millions of hours and fundraise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans, military service personnel, and their families. Through our National Programs, we assist the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families, provide nearly a million volunteer hours in the VA medical system, conduct patriotic programs with thousands of students and offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. With more than 4,000 Auxiliaries, there is likely one in your area working to improve the lives of America’s uncommon heroes.

Yesterday, VFW National Veterans Service Director Ryan Gallucci had the opportunity to participate in an event for the PREVENTS Task Force. Here's what he had to say about the event:

"This afternoon, I drove up to Philly for an important event at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center with the Second Lady and Barbara Van Dahlen to discuss the tragedy of veterans’ suicide and the important work of the PREVENTS Task Force.
While catching up with Barbara, I got the chance to speak with Medical Center Director Karen Flaherty-Oxler about the care I received from her hospital when I lived in Philly and had struggles of my own.

I’ve had peaks and valleys in the years since I got out of the Army. When I moved to a new and unfamiliar city, I brought a lot of that old Iraq baggage with me. The VAMC in Philly helped me sort it out.

Fast forward to today. The pandemic has been hard. It’s opened up a lot of that baggage again. I was anxious about coming today. I haven’t been out that much... But it was cathartic (and outdoors... and masked...) It felt good to reconnect and felt like a weight off my shoulders to share my story with Barbara and Karen.

The Task Force has taken on important work, and all of us at Veterans of Foreign Wars are eager to continue playing our part.

I’m grateful for these kinds of opportunities to keep serving and motivated to keep changing the narrative on mental health."

WYOMING SENATOR STOPS BLUE WATER NAVY BILL *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* VFW national commander says caring for veterans a cost of war WASHINGTON (December 10, 2018) — The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is denouncing Sen. Mike Enzi’s obstruction of H.R. 299, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2018. The senator’s reason? We can’t afford to take care of our veterans. “If we can afford to send veterans to war, it’s unacceptable that we can’t afford to take care of them when they return home wounded, ill or injured,” said VFW National Commander B.J. Lawrence. “Agent Orange made Vietnam veterans sick, and even the former Institute of Medicine agrees when it concluded that there isn’t any scientific basis to treat Blue Water Navy veterans any different in regards to Agent Orange exposure than their peers who served on the land or inland waters of Vietnam,” he said. “What the senator just did was fail some 90,000 so-called Blue Water Navy veterans — many of whom reside in his state — who had their disability eligibility taken away in 2002 after regulatory changes. His obstruction forsakes our nation’s promise to take care of those who were injured or made ill due to their military service.” The VFW-supported H.R. 299 would have ended the injustice of denying Vietnam, Korean DMZ and Thailand veterans who suffer from life-threatening health conditions related to exposure to Agent Orange the care and benefits they deserve. “Senator Enzi’s objection now jeopardizes the chance that H.R. 299 can pass,” said Lawrence. “My disappointment with Senator Enzi’s obstruction is beyond measure, because what he did was fail to take care of forgotten veterans who were exposed to toxic substances, and he failed to take care of their children who sadly inherited a toxic legacy,” he said. “The VFW nor its members will forget this.” The VFW now calls on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to schedule a vote on this important bill before the Senate concludes the 115th Congress. “Senator Enzi failed America’s veterans,” said Lawrence. “The VFW hopes Senate leadership does not do the same.” -VFW-
