What Happens at a Relay Event
There are many moments that create the Relay experience. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below:
Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at

Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much

Mission Moment Script Week 3
How has COVID19 impacted Research?
The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research
• $4.9 billion since 1946
• 49 Nobel Prize winners
• Nearly half of the researchers we fund have reported that COVID19 has disrupted their work
Cancer hasn’t stopped and neither have our researchers. Like many of us, they are learning to work from home, away from their labs they are reviewing past data, connecting with colleagues and helping us understand how COVID19 is impacting cancer care
The funds you raise will help us keep their important work moving forward
• No single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the US has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer than the American Cancer Society (ACS). In fact, we've helped make possible almost every major cancer research breakthrough since 1946.

• Did you know that ACS has funded 49 Nobel Prize winners? With your help, we have made tremendous discoveries but they could not have done it alone. You helped us raise the money they needed. • The American Cancer Society funds research into many different types of cancer. Current Grants by cancer type are available online at https://www.cancer.org/research/currently-funded-cancer-research/grants-by-cancer-type.html

• In 2020 the American Cancer Society has funded 169 breast cancer research grants totaling $69 million. Highlights of these grants are available online at https://www.cancer.org/research/currently-funded-cancer-research/breast-cancer-research-highlights.html

• In 2020 the American Cancer Society has funded 73 colorectal cancer research grants totaling $24 million. Highlights of these grants are available online at https://www.cancer.org/research/currently-funded-cancer-research/colon-and-rectal-cancer-research-highlights.html

I’ve never been more proud to work for team ACS. Before COVID-19, our more than 30 Hope Lodges across the country provided a free place to stay— a home-away-from-home for cancer patients whose best treatment option was far from home. Due to the growth of the pandemic, ACS made the heartbreaking decision to suspend operations for the Hope Lodge program to ensure the health and safety of our cancer patient residents, staff and volunteers. On Friday ACS announced that our Hope Lodge facilities around the country will be made available for health care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus fight -- at no cost -- through the health care systems we are affiliated with.
